Half screen started to go dark red/darker, then came back to normal. Now if switched on it has a shakey/ghosty picture followed a few seconds later by a dark screen.
The TV is ex-display, we've had it for two weeks, but still it did not do this at the start.
We have had satellite connection for the last week. I have checked the leads, tried the on/off technique - it is bizarre!
Appreciate any help!

The panel or TCON board has failed, the solution is the same replace the panel. Not worth the cost, get a new TV

Yes, its most probably lamp issue.
Please but original Sony lamp from Sony store and replace it in TV.

If you have not replaced TV Lamp yet then change it.
Lamp is available in Part Store and lamp procedure is written in User Manual.

Please count Sony KDL-46V3000 standby light blinks as there would be interval of 3 seconds between blinks. Let me know how many times light blinks as its an error code.

Most likely this is caused by a defective main board. Changing the main board will fix the issue about 95% of the time.
To be absolutely sure, the voltages need to be checked on the power supply. If they are not the values listed in the service manual, then you should replace the power supply instead (accounts for the other 5% of the time).
