I was replacing the carbon brush and, the new one was longer, so was the spring. I tried to remove it and the spring came off so now it is stuck. Please help! Thank you!

Rather than doing a motor tear down to take out the brush holders, try this. first turn the mixer on it's side. (Use a folded towel to avoid breaking the knob from either the lock or speed control) then tap the machine to see if it will dis lodge.if not a very small drill bit drilled into the stuck brush will usually work. drill a little way in and stop the drill, now pull out and the brush should come out with the drill bit. You may ahve to do it once or twice to get the brush out but it works for me the couple times I had stuck brushes. Dont push the drill hard let the bit do the work. Let us know if this helps.

SOURCE: Which way do the brushes go on the K45SS stand KA Mixer?

Look carefully at the bruch, it should have a cupped chape that matched the curve of the armature. If it went in wrong, you may have wither broken the brush, or messed the armature. You can get new brushes online from many parts retailers, just google you part number and the word "brushes"

SOURCE: I removed one of the brushes on my KitchenAid

depending on how deep and how stuck it is there is a possible way to pull it out; add a tiny dot of crazy glue to the end of a wooden skewer or chopstick and hold it until it dries. It can then be pulled out ..sometimes. I have had brushes stick and (if the motor worked) just left them alone rather than go into full disassembly mode.

The first method is not ideal, but a little easier than drilling a tap hole in the back of the brush and pulling it out with a screw extractor.
Good luck with your project,

SOURCE: How to replace motor brushes? I only can take the

I believe the brushes and the spring are one piece, so the brush should come out with the spring. Either the brushes are so worn that you just aren't noticing the little bit that's left, or the block has come loose from the spring. You can tip the machine over so the brush hole is facing down and let gravity do the work. If there's any brush left inside, it should slide out. Otherwise just install the new brushes.

How can I fix a Salton KM386 stand mixer that has lost half of its' power?

It may need new carbon brushes in the motor, but whether you can get them is another matter. Phone their service department. You may also have lubrication issues that is slowing it down.

Motor replacement

The motor is not a single part, you test the components and purchase only those that are faulty. You will need to dismantle the unit to test everything but you should be doing your checking with your eyes and a meter as you strip it down. You may locate the fault before it turns into a major repair.

Wont turn on

The two plastic screws are the carbon brush holders, not something you should be fiddling about with unless you are changing the brushes. It is quite common for the brushes to wear out and need replacing so taking the caps off and checking the brush length would be a good idea. The brushes only fit in one way, one corner is ground off to allow it to go past a blocking key in a corner of the holder. Use a torch to see which way to put the brushes back in. If they are too short get new ones.

I used my k45ss mixer last saterday it did the job. I let it plugged until sunday and since then it's dead. What happened... could it be the plug... Sue

I have heard similar problems when the mixer has been transported. It usually happens if the mixer is transported on its side. If there was any burned flour on the brushes the jostling of the mixer can cuse it to get between the brushes and the armature.

So check the brushes. They get caked up with burned flour. Remove the brush caps and pull the brushes out by their springs, being VERY careful to note the position of them since they only go back in one way. Measure the free length of the spring before pulling it out. It is critical that you write down the length sticking out with very slight pressure on it so that it is seated against the armature when you measure.

Clean the curved surface of the carbon brushes with a sharp knife being careful not to scratch the curved surface. If you have them installed wrong they will not go all the way in and will not contact the armature and it will not run. Measure the length, as done above, of the spring to make sure it is in correctly!! If it is not in correctly the spring will stick out 1/4 inch longer than it should.

I took a KitchenAid K45 apart to clean (made in

What everyone is forgetting or they just don't know is that...The K45 introduced by Hobart in 1962 and was replaced in 1978 by the K45SS are two completely different machines. With completely different wiring systems. The K45 is wired together with wire nuts and the K45SS used connectors on the Speed control switch. All of the websites posted above are for the K45SS (Stands for Solid State) The manual for he K45SS is easy to get from Kitchenaid as the mixer electronics did not change from it's introduction in 1978 to 1986 when Hobart sold the Kitchenaid division to Whirlpool. The K45 on the other hand is a product and property of Hobart NOT Whirlpool or the Kitchenaid division of Whirlpool. The K45 Manual ... well I just can't find one! They way wires are routed is totally different in the K45 from the K45SS so the diagram in the K45SS manual does not help. Also the brushes in the K45 were square not camphor-ed like they are in the K45SS so there is no right or wrong way to insert the brushes in a K45. Whereas; in the K45SS there are four ways to insert the brushes in their holder and three of them are wrong. The K45SS brushes go into a completely different brush holder than the K45. The K45SS is the same today in 2012 as it was in 1978. The K45 is the same only from 1962 when Hobart introduced it to 1978 when it was replaced with the new Solid State model. prior to 1962 it was the K4-A model and it was different entirely. So if the people asking for help say their mixer is a K45 we should be asking for clarification as to a K45 or a K45SS.

Check the brushes aren't worn. They should be longer than 5/16". They can be accessed through the caps on either side of the unit.

How do i know if my graphite motor brushes are ok?

If you have some length on the brushes they sound OK. If they're getting short they may need replacing because they're not making full contact all the time and may be arching. Your problem may also be in the gearbox. May need new grease and have the gears, shafts and bearings checked for excessive wear.

Mixer will not start

The motor slides in from the rear, which in held on by just a couple of screws. I would check the brushed first to be sure they are not worn. They are the two big plastic slotted screws to either side. I have seen them actually melt from the heat as they get worn. You may need to clean the armature with a glass brush when cleaning them.

KitchenAid 300 Watts - doesn't turn on

the brushes are not square, but have one corner cut off.  use a flashlight to see which direction the brushes must be put back.  clean the ends of them well with a cotton cloth before reinstallation.
try spinning the rotor-head by hand, then try turning it on (sometime junk is stuck between the brushes and the commutator (motor).
