Sony KDS-R50XBR1 shutting off

My Sony tv is randomly shutting off and coming back on. It can go for several hours or it could be every two or three minutes. I've had the tv for about a year and it shows no other problems. Sony really had no solution other than leaving it unplugged for a little or making sure it was plugged directly into an outlet. I have an extended warranty and have contacted a repair man. They haven't come out to look at it yet, but they think it could be the lamp. The problem is if it turns out to be a lamp, the warranty won't pay for the service call because the lamp coverage I have is just for parts so I want to see if I can figure this out before having the repair man come out. The lamp indicator trouble light on the front of the tv is not lit and the tv doesn't blink in red for the trouble codes when it shuts off. Any ideas?

IDENTICAL PROBLEM AS STATED IN THE LAST POST REGARDING THE 30/30 ISSUE....TV TURNS ON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS, THE POWERS OFF AND THE GREEN LIGHT BLINKS 30 TIMES AND THEN COMES ON AGAIN....IT HAS DONE THIS FOR DAYS AND HAS STILL NOT COME BACK TO LIFE AT ALL......ODD, PURCHASED THE TV IN AUGUST 2005, AND IT MAY BE THE LAMP, BUT THE PICTURE IS CLEAR WHEN THE DEVICE IS ON....I DO NOT HAVE THE FAN, AND MAYBE THAT IS THE ISSUE...NOT SURE...WILL NOT PURCHASE A SONY PRODUCT EVER AGAIN, AS THIS IS RIDICULOUS...PLUS, THERE ARE ONLY 3 REPAIR SHOPS IN NEW ENGLAND, WHICH ACCORDING TO SONY, CAN SERVICE MY DEVICE...UNACCEPTABLE..I'M SURE THERE ARE OTHERS OUT THERE WHO COULD DIAGNOSE, BUT O WELL...ANY SOLUTUIONS OTHER THAN THE LAMP, PLEASE POST....THANKS GUYS....

My Sony was doing this too. The tech found that the reflector around the bulb was cracked probably from overheating of the bulb. The TV was shutting down to cool down the bulb. This fixed the problem. I had over 6000 hrs anyways on my bulb. HTHs

When the lamp becomes weak in this Sony the unit will shut off intermittently. I would replace the lamp and use only an OEM Sony lamp, not an LTI or other knock off. The knock off lamps are of poor quality in my experience and opinion.

I have a Sony KDS-R50XBR1. it worked fine last night, this morning however, it did not come on at all. it blinks green for awhile, then blinks red continuesly. what is wrong? please help.

The red blinks are a diagnostic tool. If you search this site for KDS-R50XBR1 you will see several problems and the area to look in to. the red blinks should be followed by a three second pause and then repeat. Just count the blinks after the pause and you should have a better idea of what is wrong. The service manual goes all the way up to ten blinks.

Hi,

TV comes on and then shuts off,and a small red l keeps flashing.

If its flashing red repeating groups of three then the lamp door is not detected .
If its flashing in groups of four then a fan is not starting.Look in the vent in the back and spray some canned air into then big fan on the left(looking at it from the back) .That fan may be failing and has gotten to a place where it can't quite start again and just moving it a little with some air will make it work for a while.
If its not one of those two things let me know.

Sony kds-r50xbr1 turns itself off and then green light blinks 52

I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working.  The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode.  Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it.  Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced.  If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp.  The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual.  I hope this helps you.
