Question about Garmin GPSMAP 198C GPS Receiver

1 Answer

No power Garmin 198c will not turn on. Wiring on boat and all fuses seem fine. Before it would not power on at all it would go off for no reason and I would have to turn back on. Any suggestions? thanks

Could be worth a look at the connector on the back of the unit itself. As I discovered a few weeks back, they aren't as saltwater resistant as the IP67 rating would lead you to expect. Compare the pins in the plug with the diagram on page 99 of your manual (also downloadable from and make sure all the pins that are supposed to be there actually are. In particular, make sure pin 15 is in a decent state. This one carries power to the unit, but will act as a sacrificial anode in the presence of saltwater, and can rapidly corrode to oblivion. If this is what has happened, you have a bit of a problem, because Garmin, don't appear to be very good at making spares available. I was lucky in that the GPS I was fixing was a lower end model that only used five of the seven pins in its connector, so I was able to rewire to provide a supply through the unused pins. The diagram suggests that the 198C also sports a few unused pins, so you may well be in luck. A.

I have a Garmin 2010c on my boat and turns off every 10mins.. what can be the problem?

Bad connection or a fault to the unit.

Do you have it on a separate battery? It is best if they are, or connect direct to the starting battery, not connected via power that you find in the console or on a power bar.

Make sure you are using good quality copper stranded wire of the correct gauge with soldered or properly crimped connectors. I think it is 18 gauge, but your installation instructions will guide you. Also mentions 24 AWG. Manual states;

There are two wiring diagrams provided for you convenience. The first is a simple hook-up showing the GPSMAP 2006/2010 (using the 18-
pin wiring harness), the GPS 17 and the alarm circuit. The Alarm does not have to be wired for the unit to function. The second is a complete
wiring diagram showing the GPSMAP 2006/2010 (using the 18-pin wiring harness) interfacing with a variety of different equipment. The extra
5-pin wiring harness that came with the unit is intended for future interfacing features and does not require connection. Refer to the wiring
diagram that will best suite your needs. Make sure that all connections are good. For extra lengths of wire, 24
AWG (unless otherwise noted on
wiring diagram), shielded, twisted-pair wiring is recommended. We advise soldering all connections and sealing the connection with heat shrink
tubing. If you experience difficulty wiring the unit, please contact an installation professional in your area.

Make sure the connections are good on the rear of the unit including plugs to the transducer. You can coat with a little Vaseline which his electrically conductive.

States the unit is susceptible to RFI and should be 3 feet away from a radio antennae.

Finally, make sure the inline fuse and connections to it are good.

If all that seems good, the first thing to do is swap out the transducer for a new one. Still does it? Send the unit for repair.

Does it also do it at rest in the marina, or do you trailer the boat?

I have a Humminbird 998 HD Si.

Engine blows fuse under cover almost every time I turn it off. Runs fine until I turn it off again.

Hi Bill:
Working from logic only, the reason a fuse blows is that it is getting excessive current. If the fuse blows when the motor is turned off, it would seem possible that the switch is not functioning properly.
I would try to isolate the switch and check it with a continuity meter to see if it is defective.

Marine radio keeps blowing a fuse

Follow instructions for wiring up speakers. If you don't have instructions should help Now, turn off the radio Double check your power source and wiring to find a short from the battery to the radio. Turn on the radio to see if it is now ok. I am almost 100% sure you have a short somewhere between your battery and radio. Make sure you have the pos. and neg.wires in the right place.

We have a brand new Bayliner 210. Our boat battery had been fine until we hooked up the Garmin 160C. Today when we got to the dock the boat battery was dead. Does the Garmin use boat battery power when it...

Hello there:
they do use some of the battery if it is wired into somthing that feeds directly off the battery i would recomend getting a battery disconnect switch this way when you turn off the switch the whole electrical system will be disabled. go to they have them listed on their website even though they might not be local you can get a idea of what you are going to be looking for ok?
best regards mike

On the GPS Garmin the radar screen shows our boat turned the wrong way. How do you turn the boat around on screen?

My husband moved the boat slightly and it seemed to correct the radar screen somewhat. He is working on the whole boat at present so didn't want to take it completely for a drive down the river. If we have further problems we may call in or use the web site.

No power to trailer running lights

This is a known issue and to my knowledge there was even a recall order to correct this fault. It would seem the the wiring harness itself is the reason. You may want to reference these pages here and/or here.

Should you however prefer to perform a DIY, then you would need a DVM to check for voltages. This page shows the possible wiring scheme used by most manufacturers for trailer configuration.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
