take out the back screws i think there are 3. And move the top to back, lift the top a litter bit then push forward and the top can be opened.

Someone, Im not finding that model number. Going by the first six digits Im assuming that this is a regular top loader and not an Oasis washer. If so, remove the end caps on the consol by pulling them off. Remove the screws under each end cap and flip the consol up. Unplug the lid switch connector and snap springs holding the cabinet on. The whole cabinet will pull forward and you can get at the lid switch. Check out the pics and post back...Catriver.

SOURCE: How does one replace the lid switch?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.#######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The Kenmore / Whirlpool top load uses a reversing motor to initiate the pump for draining and the transmission to spin.

If you cannot hear the motor trying to turn the pump, (but the washer will agitate) the problem points to the Timer, or the Lid Switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

Following is a description of how to release the console for access to the pins.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.

The agitator won't work, and the button under the lid fell off. What can we do to fix it, or would it cost too much to fix it?

Can you provide the exact Make, Model and Kenmore model number? ..........

Kenmore model numbers use the format ###.######## with the first three digits of 110 for Whirlpool manufactured machines.........

The model number on top load washers is usually found by lifting the lid and looking above the tub.

The Fixya numbers are Stock Numbers.

Since basic top load direct drive, top load electronic and front load washers are very different, the actual Model Numbers are necessary to correctly diagnose the problem.

IF THIS IS A BASIC KENMORE / SEARS TOP LOAD, DIRECT DRIVE WASHER THE PROBLEM IS LIKELY A LID SWITCH. (EASY AND INEXPENSIVE TO FIX)

I'D NEED TO KNOW THE BRAND AND MODEL NUMBER TO BETTER SUGGEST A SOLUTION.

Kenmore top load washer, it washes but won't rinse or spin, I tried to lift the top off to check the lid switch becuse the lever pad is stuck down, but how do the tops lift off

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Lid Switch

HI, The part# is 3949238. There are two ways to replace this switch. The easiest is to remove the two screws holding the lid switch. Pull the switch out enough that you can clip the wires at the switch. Cut the harness off of the new switch leaving enough wire to put wire nuts on connecting them together.
The other way to change the switch is to remove the cabinet. Here is how:
Removing the cabinet. UNPLUG the washer. There are two screws holding the control panel to the cabinet. Most models the screw are in front but, some models have the screws in back. They are on each end. Now raise the control panel up and let it rest on the hinges. Unplug the lid switch harness and locate the clips on each side (bronze in color) and release them.
Now the cabinet will lift off the frame and you can see the lid switch.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

How do I replace the lid switch on kenmore top loading washer 23902? I can't seem to remove the back panel of the washer.

REMOVE THE 2 SCREWS ON TOP DOWN AT THE BASE OF THE CONTROL PANEL, SLIDE IT FORWARD A BIT AND LIFT IT UP IT IS HINGED IN THE REAR. NOW REMOVE THE TWO BRASS LOOKING CLIPS FROM THE TOP AND REMEMBER HOW THEY GO BACK UNDO THE LID SWITCH CONNECTOR(IT LOOKS LIKE IT GOES THROUGH THE TOP DOWN INSIDE). NOW GRASP THE CABINET AND PULL TOWARD YOU TILL THE BOTTOM DISENGAGES FROM THE WASHER BASE.NOW YOU CAN CHANGE THE LID SWITCH

Install the switch

Anthony, you usually need to pull the 3-sided cabinet off the machine to get that part installed. Some can do it from the top, but having the cabinet off is the easiest. You have to open the control panel up first, then unhook the lid switch connector harness, then pop out the two straps that secure the cabinet to the back/bulkhead. Now the while cabinet/top of the washer lifts away by tipping it up and forward towards you. Now you will see that lid switch bracket assembly you want to replace is easy to get at.

Kenmore Top Load washer

You can replace the switch, it appears, without lifting the lid. I've ordered the repair manual (LIT4314044) but I can feel the connector and wires. It appears that the lid switch can be replaced without taking anything apart. There does appear to be a screw on the back that holds the ground in place.
