I keep getting 86:01 error. The following have happened in the past. 1) Paper will feed and work for a print or two, then we are greeted the error. 2) Paper will load then we get an error. 3) Attempt start up then error occurs with no paper loaded. 4) Started the unit, fed paper, loaded successfully then printheads lock into position and start chattering in the area they are maintained. (left side) All of these times I have had to load the paper first because error had occured and the printer asked to remove before I shut down the unit.

I struggled with this on my HP C5180 until I pushed the photo tray in further.... I think.
SOURCE: paper jam occurred, now printer wont print.

The problem refers to basically a paper jam. I thing your problem could however be the carrage movment. There is a special oil required for the carrage, but failid this use a very thin oil such as sewing machine oil. The trick is to not use too much oil, only a drop or two over the entire length of the carrage. Also needs to be oiled is UNDER the rail towards the back. Look carefully at the back of the carrage where it has the back slider. This rail needs to be clean and lubricated. Probable easier to clean and lubricate if you remove the encoder strip.

Check tray 1 there should be an arm hanging down in the center of the tray the arm goes thru a slot in the metal plate. This arm moves when you install paper in tray 1. If the arm is missing or not in the slot the machine will think paper is in tray 1 and try to feed from tray 1. You can try changing the paper size setting for tray one to something other than the size in tray 2.
For example If tray 2 is set for 8.5x11 set tray 1 for legal.
The machine should then pull the correct size based on the print job.
Hope this helps
