I'm lookng to upgrde the CPU on my Toshiba Equium M50-192 (I believe the motherboard is called PSM59E) from a Celeron M 370 to a Pentium M 770 or suchlike. However, the Pentium has a FSB of 533MHz while that of the Celeron is 400MHz. Is this going to create a problem? Thanks in advance, Robert

Looking at the chart, and reading across, you can see what the Intel 810 motherboard chipset supports;

1) Processors: Intel Celeron, or Intel Pentium II, or Intel Pentium III.

2) Processor Front Side Bus: (FSB) 66MegaHertz, or 100MHz.

3) SDR Sdram ram memory at 100Megahertz.

Clean the bottom of the Heatsink THOROUGHLY, and the top of the Processor if it needs it. (I always do anyway)

PROPERLY apply fresh, new Thermal Paste.

It will take up to a Intel Pentium III 1Ghz or Intel Celeron 1.1GHz CPU.

it supports the following processors:
Celeron, Pentium III, C3, Pentium III-S

Intel Pentium III and Celeron CPUs less than 1001 Mhz were FC-PGA.
Intel Pentium III and Celeron CPUs more than 1200 Mhz were FC-PGA-2.

However, Intel made CPUs in the 1000 to 1200 range that were FC-PGA
*AND* Intel made CPUs in the 1000 to 1200 range that were FC-PGA2.

So, all FC-PGA CPUs will work in almost every Socket 370 motherboard,
but all FC-PGA-2 CPUs require a motherboard that supports FC-PGA-2 CPUs.

You should be able to upgrade the CPU, since it seems that the DV1000's motherboard uses a socket CPU design. But, obviously, HP would rather have you choose the CPU that you want from the beginning and stick with it.
The first thing to do is to check HP website to see what other configurations were/are sold for your model. If they sell it with faster CPUs then you can upgrade to one of them...

PLEASE NOTE:
In order for a particular processor to be compatible with a particular laptop:
(1) the processor must be physically compatible with the laptop socket, in your case I thing you have a Soket 479 processor
(2) the laptop chipset must support the processor.
(3) the chipset front side bus speed must match the processor front side bus speed, in your case 400Mhz.
(4) the laptop BIOS must support the processor.

So I listed here processors with FSB at 400Mhz, I gues that DV1000 as a 855GM Motherboard that supports only 400Mhz with Socket 479

you can only use socket 370 (Intel Celeron/Intel Pentium III) processors on that motherboard. Your maximum cpu speed is set by the bios.

Yes. Your motherboard only supports cpu's with a FSB of 400mhz. If you want to upgrade you would need a compatible cpu running 400mhz FSB. Hope this helps.

The core2 duo chips will be a different socket to your celeron cpu so can do that unfortunately. You may be able to upgrade to a faster cpu of the same socket type but will probably need a bios update for it to run at proper speed.

Unfortunately laptops arent really designed to be upgraded at all bar extra ram/hd/dvdrw.
