use windows xp sp1, windows media player 9. plug device. wait for mtp display. reboot pc. un plug device then plug it again. upgrade media player to 10. that's it! enjoy!

LCD is soldered onto the board. Meaning the difficulties of replacing
the LCD will be there, not to say it would not be possible. But for
about the same price (my guess by looking on ebay), you could get a
used Zen Xtra (without a hdd) for about $30 or less. After you get a
new board you could replace your player with the new used one, making
use of your old hdd
