Do both the LCD display and the Viewfinder not work? Or did you press the EVF/LCD button?
I can remember I had some panicking events with my camera, because I switched to a mode I did not understand (or even did not notice I did switch something) and only after intensive searching I found what I did wrong. My camera still works as it should, although I have fought severals times, now it is really defect. So don't panic or thing the worst.
Don't think you are stupid when you take the manual, to see how settings are.

Usually the printers have only one USB port. If you had broke it, then it can be replaced (if mainboard is NOT DAMAGED). USB port is very cheep but you will need tools and skills to replace it. There is only USB input port(from flash memory stick) in front of the printer

This is a non essential part and does not have to be in place for the camera to operate properly. I would suspect that the part can be ordered through a Fujifinpix sales dealer. This little plastic cover on all my cameras is the first thing to be removed and lost.

Since the card seems to be working (you can take pictures and view them on the screen afterwards) the problem must be with the USB. I assume Linux and XP is on 2 different computers? If, not, it could also an electrical error with the USB ports.
Hopefully, it's just the USB cord. Can you loan another one to try with? USB type is called Mini-B.

it does'nt really matter IDE or SATA both are using same connector. you can change it from second hand or from another board sometimes its not available.

When I press ok it brings up date time and year, and just use arrow buttons to move along and select, then ok when finished.

I had this problem with my S9500, the small dial/wheel for changing shutter speeds, F settings, etc stopped working. Luckily I had a few weeks left on the extended warrenty and had it sorted for free. Fuji had to replace that whole part of the mechanism as something internally went wrong.
It may be something simple if you are prepared to look at it yourself. I know it's not the same, but when the thumbwheel stopped working on my ipod, I took it apart and found a few grains of sand had gone between the contacts thus breaking the circuit. Cleaned it out and hurrah! It works again.

Go to the menu and format the card (as long as it's blank) formatting will erase all data from the card
