I need to update my tomtom 1xl maps. It is one year old.

You will only get a free update on a new device if you install tomtom home on your computer and login withing the first 2-3 months of purchasing your device. Also, if you purchased a device that is "refurbished" or "recertified" then you do not get this free update and your map can be up to about a year and a half old. In this case, you would have to purchase a map update. To update you will have to install TomTom Home on your computer (download from TomTom.com) and login. You can typically purchase one update for about 45 USD or purchase a year of updates for just a little more (like 59.99 USD). A "year of updates" gives you an updated map each quarter for one year. I don't know that I would have bought a TomTom for use outside of North America or the UK. Sorry.

There ar frequent minor map corrections accessible through MapShare. You configure your GPS to accept these corrections. You can selected to accept ALL, or from TRUSTED sources, or ONLY corrections verified by TomTom.
Connect the unit to the computer and download the MapShare corrections. If your map is too old, maybe it is time to get the latest one.

If you have started using your unit not long ago (less than 30 days) you may have the right to a free update. TomTom offers the 30 day latest map guarantee.

Connect the unit to a computer where you installed the tomtom HOME application. Upon registration, HOME will proceed to update your GPS.

Hope this helps looks like you haveto pay for map updates after 30 days, but I am not positive.

Reinstall TomTom Home and make sure you update your drivers if asked to do so. You also may want to download maps directly from TomTom's map store - http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php

It may take a while for a new road/expressway to make it to updates. Tele Atlas has to verify the change, and often times there are so many changes, that some may not make it into the update right away. If it is an expressway, I'm sure newer users have reported the correction, but best advice is to report the correction again, and hopefully it will show up in TE's next set of maps.

just keep updating your applications software and rebooting after each update. this worked for my tomtom 1XL.

Map updates for the TomTom brand GPS devices are available through the manufacturer's website at:

How often map updates are needed really depends on where you live and how you use the GPS. In heavily populated areas where there is a lot of new construction, updates are likely to be useful more often then in rural areas. Exactly how often you need to update is really up to you.

Map updates for your TomTom GPS can be purchased and installed through the TomTom HOME GPS manager program. You will need to download and install the TomTom HOME software onto your computer.
