FIXED! Garmin 2720 Power Cable Defect

I've read many posts on the web where people had their 2720 suddenly shut off or lose power when driving or if they hit a bump in the road. Some had Garmin replace the cable, but most purchased new power cords or bought new units. I have had my unit exactly 2 years and all Garmin would do is offer to sell me a power cable or direct me to a vendor. I think this is very poor customer service since there is an obvious design flaw in their connector.

I wish I could post a before & after photo, but not sure how. Anyway, the defect is in the connector that attaches to the unit. There is a thin plate attached to the end of the power cable that has begun to separate at the bottom of the connector making the brass contacts lose connection with the contacts on the unit. Here is the fix: I simply used super glue around the entire edge of the connector and clamped the plate to the connector over night. I also used fine steel wool (not SOS pads) to clean the contacts on the back of the unit. Next morning, I unclamped and connected the power cable to the 2720 and everything worked great. In addition, the thin film of super glue made an even tighter connection so there is absolutely no wiggle in the connection. Side note: Make sure to check the cigarette lighter adaptor. The tip should be screwed down snug. I hope this helps someone save $45. Good Luck!

My Garmin 2720 will not power up most of the time then it gets locked MAPS. I noticed a connector pin on the plug looks like it is broken does anyone have a similar situation and does buying a new cable seem to be the best fix for me? Thanks

Just a caution, that's gold plating, it won't tarnish so you shouldn't need to clean it.

SOURCE: garmin 250 first gave low battery warnings, now

The battery on your GPS is NOT user servicable. You should contact Garmin at www.garmin.com to inquire about getting the battery replaced.

Testimonial: "I know it says that on the device info, however, with a screw driver, I opened the unit, unplugged the battery and removed it. So, why not servicealb"

How does one update th gps?

You connect the 2720 to your pc with the supplied usb cable.
Power up the 2720 with the ac supply cable.
Then run the garmin webupdater. It will do the update.

You must have previously installed the webupdater and the usb drivers. If you use the garmin mapsource software and can connect to the 2720, to transfer waypoints, tracks, etc., then the usb drivers are already installed.

You can download the webupdater at this site:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Hope this helps.

Unable to update unit

When you plug in the USB cable, if your System, Hardware, Device Manager lists "GARMIN Devices", then the problem has to be in your network connection or Garmin WebUpdater. If your Device Manager doesn't list "GARMIN Devices" then the problem is in the computer, USB cable, or 2720.

I have three 2720s right now with bad USB ports. I'm going to try replacing the USB driver chip in each unit, but now I'm just guessing. Hope this helps. Tom

Garmin 2720 lost sound

It sounds like the audio power amplifier is failing in the unit, it's kinda classic for an audio amplifier to fail when it gets hot, then work again when it cools down.

I'd suggest deleting the language you're using, then reload v7.2 firmware and the language. No reason why this should work, but it doesn't cost anything. If not you're looking at a $250 Garmin flat rate repair.

Garmin GPS 2720

Unfortunately, Fixya is not associated with Garmin. We can only answer device questions and can't speak for the company.

Unfortunately, the unit cannot be upgraded. Garmin provides both in and out of warranty repair service if the unit is having a problem. The 2720 sells for $49 on Amazon, so it probably is not worth your while to have fixed.

The 2720 is known to have issues unfortunately, it is pretty lowly rated on Amazon.

Gps 2720

I tried another power cord and that was not the problem. I did do a firmwre update and that corrected the unit. It has been working well for the past 3 weeks. You should go to the Garmin website and download the latest FIRMWARE update.
