Thank you in advance for any insight. I have recently purchased a samsung HP-T5054 plasma tv as well as Samsung's DVD home theater HT-x50.
I have connected them via HDMI. However, i can get sound only from DVD or tuner. When i attempt to get sound from tv programs playing i am unable to.
Please let me know what i am missing......

It really depends on how much you want to spend. A home theater set=up will probably be a bit hard to get without a DVD player. Let me know your budget, and I will see what i can come up with. Do you have to stick with Samsung by the way?
Have you resolved this issue yet? I am in a similar position. recently upgraded my TV to a flat screen, also purchased a Blu-Ray but the SC-HT880 is now useless. How can I use the surround sound to work on TV? do I need to purchase an Amp?
A common problem with these "all in one units"
When you have a DVD playing it is a digital signal direct to the processor.
When you have an external source ie: TV etc it may be a digital source, but you have to tell the Samsung unit this.
Make sure when it is on the TV setting (Aux) or whatever input you have chosen is in Dolby Digital or similar, Not stereo.
The unit should have a setting for this called sound program or sound setting.
Run a regular RCA type audio cable from your TV audio out to your Home Theatre audio in. That is what I have done recently with my Samsung LCD and Home Theater. You then have to put your Home Theater on Aux 1 or Aux 2 to get the sound from TV. Ensure your TV's volume is off.
