Honda generator GX270 idles but won't speed up under load

Is there a load sensor that controls engine speed when it is under load? Engine idles just fine but does not rev up under load. If the engine is revved up manually it will generate power. This unit is almost new and I don't want to tinker with other adjustments until I can pin point the problem.

Yes this load sensor module has a coil that is wrapped on a single line of stator output.this board may utilize a 12 volt source from alternator

SOURCE: Powermate 6250 loaps.

I took a new generator out of the box, filled it with oil and gas then started it. The govenor /carb linkage was moving violenting back and forth and the engine was backfiring.

I was able to get it to settle down by holding the linkage and closing the throttle plate a little but it would resume surging and backfiring when I let go of the linkage.

I tried again several weeks later. This time, after babying the linkage to get it to settle down, I moved the linkage about a 1/4 inch (which closed the throttle plate slightly) and lightly secured it in place with a ty-wrap. After running 10 minutes it finally settled down to where the backfiring stopped and the linkage stopped moving.

It was still okay after powering a heater motor and light.

I'm thinking that the problem with this engine is just that it needs a long warm-up time. I know very little about engines, so I could be wrong.

Hi, I have the same generator and I pull the load and it is fine. The engine RPM is controlled by the 
governor. The voltage will not come up until the RPM is at full. First see what the RPM problem is and then check the voltage. Open the cover and look to see if the carb linkage is hooked up , if it is you mite have carb problem and address that first. Hope that helps.

While attending college I worked at a tool rental center and learned a great deal about matching generators to customer requirements and troubleshooting customer owned units. There are simple tests that you can perform, however, first some info on what to expect from a generator. Most generators are overrated and under powered. You should only expect to get about 60 - 75% of rating. Example, a commercial honda 5000w generator has an 11hp motor that can only produce about 9.5 hp at 3600 rpm. If a customer needed 5000w of power, we would rent them an 8000w generator because as the generator is loaded to max the voltage will drop. You generator will probably only provide steady voltage ex. 115v at 60 cycles to about 3500w then voltage will begin to drop. New generators have automatic voltage regulator that varies the power to the armature increasing/decreasing the power of the magnet. These voltage regulators suffer a high failure rate and are expensive. If your generator is not giving you 3500 watt at 115v 60 cycles your engine may have a few problems and your power generator end may need tweaking. (I would not expect to achieve 5500w at 115v with briggs 10hp) .
The governor is about 2 inches in diameter and turns off the cam gear inside the engine. It is flyball type with two or three small arms that react to rpm. The faster the engine turns, more force is applied to the governor arm to reduce engine speed. Easy to test, with engine running use finger pressure against the arm to increase speed and you should feel a greater resistance as the engine speed increases. Another simple test, remove air filter to expose butterfly inside the carb. Move the governor arm and check that the butterfly opens fully. If it does not open fully linkage and governor is not set correctly. Next, start engine and load generator up to max and check that butterfly opens to full as the load increases. When the butterfly opens all the way under load the engine is at max. Add up the wattage of all the tools/appliances you used to load the engine to get an idea of max load . Lets assume that the shop adjusted the governor properly, if the governor was not working the engine would over rev. and damage would occur. As you were told the governor spring controls speed and can be adjusted somewhat by bending tab or adjustment screw. But a review of your generator manual or that series of briggs engine will show that there are several governor springs available and different placement holes on the governor arm to attach the spring that will change the power curve. Pulling on the spring can only do so much, however changing the spring to different gauge /turns/material or differnet location on the governor arm will cause the engine to perform differently. These springs are sold thru briggs dealers by part number for your engine. This would be considered tweaking to get a different power curve.
Now for the generator. Some generators have a capacitor incorporated in the windings. This capacitor must measure within 95% of rating. Remove from circuit for testing. Finally look very carefully at the commutator rings for any evidence of brush bounce. If the brushes do not perfectly seat you will lose power. If your generator is brushless you can only hope that the diodes are within spec. because it is too difficult to test them. They also must be removed to test. Finally if your generator has an automatic voltage regulator the only test would be to replace with a known good part. At the rental center we stocked spare parts so that we could quickly find fault. There is soo much to learn and the life too short. I hope this helps good luck, please email your questions.

That sounds just about right, if the relay contacts get welded together it sometimes takes out the driver on the printed circuit board. As you found out, 12vdc from 23 to 194 makes the transfer switch move to the Generator position, relay not energized makes the ATS move to the Normal position.

You can make a nice test function by installing a 10 amp contact switch in series with either the N1 or N2 terminals. When the switch is open the generator thinks the Normal power has failed.

I think you have an engine speed sensor fault. its not reading the engine speed or the motion speed. needs these two to change speed and ( gear). one is connected to the abs unit and the other is on the engine. usually if they both go its down to the gear box ecu. you can check if you have it on a ecu reader. will have fault codes or not be read at all.

High idle when air con On 3000rpm


The IAC valve is controlled by the ECU. The IAC or Idle Air control valve, adjusts depending on information that the ECU receives from several engine related sensors. You need to look at everything that you can. Inspect all wiring and connections, around the engine. Look for damaged vacuum lines and if you know how to, look for air leaks going into the head. If unmetered air gets into the engine, bypassing the TAC unit. Then the ECU will not be able to make correct adjustments. Also look at the coolant level, temp, and condition. The long and short of it is that the ECU oversees the engine speed. Depending on different parameters, turning on the A/C sends a signal to the ECU that the engine load has been increased. Depending on other information (whether it is correct or not) the engine speed is increased to maintain engine speed. I hope this information helps but if not please write back. Be as specific and detailed as you can and I'll do my best, good luck.

    • 1 Park your RSV 1000R on a well-ventilated, level area, using its kickstand.
    • 2 Start the engine and let it idle in place until the temperature gauge built into the instrument cluster indicates a minimum internal temperature of 180 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the motorcycle's ideal operating temperature.
    • 3 Take note of the engine idle speed, using the tachometer needle, while the engine is running. Ideally, the engine should idle steadily at 1,250 rpm.
    • 4 Adjust the engine idle speed to 1,250 rpm, using the idle adjuster screw hidden between the lower right edge of the fuel tank and the upper edge of the right middle fairing panel. Turn the idle adjuster screw clockwise to increase the engine idle speed, or counterclockwise to decrease the engine idle speed, using a small flat screwdriver if your RSV 1000R's frame (VIN number) precedes ZD4MEE009YS000292. A plastic knob allows the engine idle speed to adjusted by hand on RSV 1000R models with a frame (VIN) numbers starting from ZD4MEE009YS000293.
    • 5 Rev the engine two to three times and observe the tachometer. The engine should return to a 1,250 rpm idle. Adjust the engine idle speed as needed, using the method described, then rev the engine again. Problems may exist within the throttle control, fuel-injection system or engine, if the engine idle speed will not hold steady at 1,250 rpm. Contact your local Aprilia service facility for assistance.
    • 6 Stop the engine, once you have obtained a steady 1,250 rpm idle speed.

The computer can't sense movement. An engine with worn spark plugs or bad coils can run perfectly fine at idle and begin misfire the second you put it into gear or under loads. Plugs/coils misfire most when under load. Have you checked them?

plug the EGR line and see how it acts. better yet put a ball bearing in that line and reconnect it to the EGR and see if it goes away. definate vacuum issue somewhere. tranny modulator, check every line coming off the firewall manifold. the throttle position sensor might need to be replaced. its one of the only moving sensors under there. on my 89 tempo I could adjust my idle, move that idle screw around so it idles up a bit to get it out of that dead area on the TPS. plug wires after that. those notchbacks are getting extremely rare, and with a V8! put it far far away....

IT CERTAINLY CAN BE THE PROBLEM. The air flow sensor if a VITAL part of your fuel delivery and emmision's system. Your mixture is controlled by a computer that uses the sensor data from that device. If you possibly can get the old one, put it back on. It is possible that I may not be totally right about this point but the operation of your engine is dependent on all the parts being there.
and also i have no codes and no ck engine light on.
There may not be code for a missing part. That system is not perfect.

The cruise control stopped working. Cruise control sign so nOT light up when I turn it ON. Nor does it works.
But car seems to work fine.

you only set base timing to 15 degrees BTDC (before top dead center).

Ignition Timing

    Depress the parking brake pedal, and warm the engine to the normal operating temperature.
  1. Turn off all electrical loads.
  1. Rev the engine to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
  1. Turn off the engine and disconnect the throttle position sensor electrical connector. (not really necessary)
  1. Start the engine and rev it to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
  1. Check the idle speed. The idle speed should be between 700-800 rpm in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) position.
  1. NOTE: Make sure that the timing pointer is pointing to the 15° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on the crankshaft pulley. Each notch on the crankshaft pulley represents 5 degrees.
    Check the ignition timing with a timing light.

If you can't isolate the cause of the intermittent problem, you can try adjusting the Idle Speed/Ignition Timing/Idle Mixture Ratio:

After checking CO%,
a. Disconnect the resistor from terminals of engine coolant temperature sensor.
b. Connect engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector to engine coolant temperature sensor.
