Computer cannot recognize some things.

I recently did a dual boot with Vista and XP and my XP computer does not recognize some things such as my chipset. Before i realized that fact, I was busy searching for a SM Bus controller that my computer need drivers for, I realized i needed to go to the AMD site [Have a AMD Processor ] to download the chipset drivers, but now the any AMD setup says "No AMD components were found" Everything is running fine currently but it bugs me that I cant find a driver for SM Bus controller.

I have Gateway GT5676 and I have no clue what Mobo I have because the detector is not able to pick it up but here is other info.

Needs driver for vista or win 7 Sony VRD-VC10 DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner

Sony does not support this burner for any operating system for Win2k and XP. The VRD-VC30 is supported in Win7 but no earlier models (from the Microsoft Compatibility Center). The Vista Compatibility Center lists the VRD-VC20 as unknown for Vista support.

There are work-arounds. Install XP as a virtual computer or in a dual boot configuration on your system and install the hardware on the "XP box". If you have Win7 Pro or Ultimate, you can download and install the XP mode for a free virtual computer. (This requires you to download two programs from Microsoft and install them (Virtual PC and the XP mode itself). Otherwise, you will need a valid XP license to install in the virtual computer software. The dual boot may work better for you since virtual computers can't share files from the main computer directly. They need to be transfered to external media or a different partition or disc that unmounted from the real computer and mounted on the virtual computer.

I hope this helps.

How to remove Ubuntu from a Vista dual-boot config

On my new PC I wanted (still want) to have toa go with Linux. I chose to experiment with Ubuntu. I downloaded thedesktop CD, burned it, freed up some disk space (inside Vista) andloaded up Ubuntu from the CD. After some experimenting I figured outhow to install Ubuntu in the empty disk space and it all worked fine(GRUB took over my booting (recognized Vista automatically!) and Ubuntuloaded up fine).

Then I tried to install my GPU drivers andeverything went wrong.. For some reason Ubuntu wouldn't boot anymore(failed to load X-Server or something). I was completely lost andwanted to remove Ubuntu.

This is where things start to get really messy!

Ifyou simply remove the Ubuntu partition, GRUB (Linux boot loader) willstill be on your PC (in control). It will trip out, as the Ubuntupartition will be removed.. Bad thing!

So you need to restore your Master Boot Record (MBR) for Vista (so that Vista will handle the booting, not GRUB).

Googleonly pointed me to sites that explained how to REMOVE VISTA, whichisn't what I wanted. Many sites talked about the 'fixmbr' command, butthis is really only available in Windows XP.

So how do you restore your MBR for Windows Vista?

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr, and then press ENTER.

That'sit. Now when you reboot your PC, Vista will load automatically... Youcan now safely boot using your Ubuntu desktop CD, to use the built inGnome Partition Manager to remove your Ubuntu partition!

From what you're saying I get that you want to install Windows XP with Service Pack 3 on your computer. Are you wanting to replace Vista, or do you want a dual boot system? Do you have a Vista CD as well if you want a dual boot system? Did you receive any other disc's with the computer that may have a driver set on it?

The problem is that you are searching AMD for a Gateway driver. They have proprietary BIOS which AMD will not recognize so get the drivers here: http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1015332R/1015332Rnv.shtml   Merry Christmas and post back if you have any further issues. Steve Medley

Windows XP

It should have come with the 32. For dual boot on this machine, go in and set up XP on the same partition as Vista. When the machine starts up it will go to a screen that allows you to choose which op system you want. You shouldn't, but if you run into conflicts you will need to create a separate partition for the two op systems.
