In Windows, in the settings section of the Fingerprint Control Center, uncheck Replace windows logon with fingerprint protected logon. In the Fingerprint section uncheck the Power-On Security section if the user has fingerprints enrolled there. You do not need to uninstall the software unless you wish to.
Well you can use medicinal alcohol or the same substance you use to clean your LCD. Works great. Also you can use isopropyl alcohol; it would be much more better.

Well, the fingerprint scanner is used for a main purpose of quickly logging you onto your computer without having to punch in your password. There is a software called Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software that should have come with your purchase of the T61. (If it didn't, you can download the software for your OS here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=TVAN-EAPFPR). Once that installed and working, you can setup your fingerprint settings and add profiles by going into the Program Files and running the 'ctlcntr' application. You should be able to use it for logging in purposes now :) Hope it helps.
Also, the reader is controlled by the OmniPass software, you can check it out from http://www.softexinc.com who developed it and find the version for XP though theere are other software to which you could use that reader as well. Hope this helps
