Flashing red power light on Gateway 700X

Computer was unresponsive and would not do a forced shutdown when I held the power button down. Had to unplug it. Let it sit for a bit and plugged it in, power light was green but immediately started flashing red, along with the lower optical drive light. The upper optical drive light is steady. Only way to shut it down is to unplug. Doesn't matter how long I leave it unplugged. Pretty sure it needs a new psu but I wanted to be sure. Thanks.

Found that unplugging ALL devices but motherboard didn't help. Unplugged motherboard and connecting to power w/o anything else and machine didn't start. Now I think it's motherboard or cpu.

unfortunately, it sounds like it. Look at motherboard and see if any caps a9look kind of like small soda cans) have bulged tops...if so you've blown one or more capaciters. You may be able to get that fixed, but you still won't know what caused it. At this point, I usually get a different computer.

I've already decided to buy an external enclosure for the hdd and connect it to my laptop. The PC is 10 yr old toast.

Try disconnecting the lower optical drive and rebooting...may just be a bad drive.

Unplugged it. After looking for a new tv online I decided to try getting it to work. So, plugged it back in and held down the power button, a red light came on, held down the power button again and an orange light came on, held down power button again and green light came on and tv powered on. This was simply a case of trial and success!

unplug, hold power button, plug in. If that doesn't work, unplug all the HDMI cables, unplug the power, hold power button, plug back in.

Old computer technicians trick. 1st, remove the battery and unplug from any power. Hold the power button down for about 10 seconds to short the board and clear any charge left in the capacitors. Plug in power supply and press the power button. It should boot up fine and you can put the battery back in.

I have a gateway ma7 laptop and press power and get nothing

When the computer is off, unplug the power cord from the laptop and then plug it back in. See if the charge light (lightning bolt symbol next to the led) comes on or turns green/blue. If it doesn't your power supply may not be working, even if the light on the supply is on. Second is the battery may be damaged. Remove the battery and see if you can power on at all.
If it boots with only the cord, the battery is bad/shorted forcing shutdown.

After shutdown of gateway laptop blue power button stays lit.....

Hi this sounds like your computer is in hibernation mode as opposed to shut down mode. Could you check and see as if running Vista many people assume that clicking on the brown power type selection under start that they are shutting down where as this actually only hibernation mode and clicking on the little arrow to the right of this and selecting shutdown is the way to go.
I hope this helps
