Pump was running fine, I turned it off for a minute then went to turn back on and it would only hum. I had another Hayward pump that did the same thing and so I replaced it with another and now it is doing the same. I only had each for about two seasons before they died. I thought these were supposed to be very reliable pumps, can someone tell me what I could look for to find out why the just quit and started to hum. Thank you

SOURCE: Pump will not start and it just hums. When I
if it has been sitting since last year, some rust could have kept the shaft from turning. Get some pump pliers and try to rock the shaft. after you get it freed up, turn it back on.

Inside the back case on the motor you'll see a white piece with two copper colored arms that have two silver points that almost touch. If these are rusty I've found that the motor won't turn over
. A quick fix is to take some 600+ grit Aluiminum oxide sandpaper and give each of those contact points a brisk sanding to remove any oxidation. This will help the points make a positive contact . Make sure while very obvious that the motor is unplugged first.
