You are correct, the unit powers entirely from the red and yellow leads. Your symptoms sound like a unit that isn't getting power on the red (switched) lead. The most likely cause is a blown fuse in your vehicle's fuse box.

SOURCE: Linking an i pod to a Sony CDX-MP40 using the bus input terminal

Some Sony head units let you use the Bus audio inputs as an auxiliary source input, but yours is not among them. To play your iPod through the head unit, you'll either need an iPod interface module: http://www.xplodsony.com/xplod/accessories/XA-110IP or an auxiliary input module: http://www.xplodsony.com/xplod/accessories/XA-300 The iPod interface will allow you to control and display the iPod directly through the head unit, while an auxiliary input adapter will allow the iPod to play through the head unit using the iPod's controls and display.

SOURCE: can the illumination colour be changed on the cdx

You will need an expert technician to open the unit, they are small bulbs with covered color lenses, usually small plastic caps. the simplies is to remove this caps and mark it with colored felt tips marker

Sony CDX-MP40, not take or load c.ds up, but ejects them!?!

Sounds like a jammed micro-switch, open it up and check for dirt in the loading mech.

Sony CDX-MP40 won't power up the amp.

Most in-dash stereos have a blue wire in the harness which is used as a "wake up" signal for external amps. Did you connect this? Does it have any voltage on it when the stereo is on?

Can't get CDX-MP40 to work...

You can get a manual here http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DOCS Your unit sounds like its dead. Try unplugging it for a day or overnight. if that dosent work your going to need to take the unit into the repair center. Good Luck
