I have removed the 2 deep Phillips head screws, the problem is removing the plastic plug. I've tried using various sized flat-blade screwdrivers with no success. The plastic just deforms without any movement. Did you use a hook of some kind? How to remove this plastic plug?

The battery compartment can be opened by removing the 2 deep set Phillips screws. Replace with 3 new 1.5 volt batteries and you can find the batteries in your local store.

The 1.5 batteries I bought are too thin and I can't find any the same thickness as what is in the babble ball

The batteries you bought are not an exact replacement. What is the number stamped on the original battery? Buy batteries with the same number. If they are a different brand, google "(insert original #) equivalent" and it should give you information on correct batteries of different brands to buy.
