In standby mode, no obvious leaking caps.would a esr meter help me find a cap that is leaking with circuit powered up?

  • Anonymous Sep 05, 2012

never use an ESR meter even the TV is in standby mode, unplugged and wait for at least 30 minutes
if your in a hurry, bleed the largest capacitor with a 4.7K 5W resistor and wait for at least 30 seconds.

SOURCE: Sony 2167 No power on

I have not worked on your particular model. But, I have serviced many TV sets over the years. My answer will ge generic.

Check all the capacitors in the horizontal output stage and power supply areas for high ESR. All the caps that are out of spec must be changed.

The high voltage multiplier & flyback can also cause the fault you are having.

You have to consider that the DC voltages are not the only important spec that has to be met. There are also many power drive signals that work with reactive devices. If there is any defect in the critical areas there will be failures.

SOURCE: KV-30XBR910 won't power on, 7 blinks

I have the same set, and same problem. After many hours/days of reading about this issue (which seems to be a popular one for this series and others) I have found a few sites that have detailed info on what can be done. This link is for a different set but the same issue. http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic.php?topic=1121&forum=34&start=80&select_page_number=9
This problem seems rampant on many Sony sets. There really should be a class action suite against them for the replacement cost of the parts which can be $400(USD) or more unless you are handy with a soldering iron.
I have a service tech coming by to look at the set soon ($75) so he can tell me what is actuall wrong with it. Once I know if it is the D-board or the usual 3 ICs that die. I will most likely have a friend of mine solder on some sockets to replace the ICs if the happen to die again.
Good luck

You are correct. You are right about the power supply and replacing with led hdtv. You will be happy with a Samsung led. Time to upgrade.

Stuck on standby

Sounds like the common capacitor problem on psu. Check all caps for bulging, leaky and venting, check with moving coil meter if available. If good with soldering iron swap out any obviously bad caps on power supply board and tv should come back to life. Problem low micro farads and or voltage on 12v + 5v lines can be cause low power from psu to other parts of TV especially high voltage inverter boards and plasma tvs remedied with caps change to stabilze voltages.
Good luck

Standby power no picture

The problem in general (as this question is) would be to inspect the power supply. The power supply board, in the TV will have bad capacitors. You will need an ESR meter to locate and replace bad capacitors. You may look for bulged or skinned caps, if you do not have an ESR meter. If you have an external power supply ( a black electrical box transformer, from ac wall outlet, with another cord that enters the TV) the problem is inside of this. Once again, you will need to replace caps here, thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

Philips 42pfl5432d/37 flat screen lcd tv has no picture or sound only the orange standby light illuminates the IR board has power except pins 3 and 4 of cn001 circuit should have about 3 volts but has 0...

The standby power supply is workingbut the rest of the power supply is not working, if it will not come on with power switch on the TV, then there is no need to look at the IR board signal (pulses, not steady DC).
You need to look and find out if the power supply is getting the PS_ON signal from the main board or not.
Please note that bad cap can look normal but can have high ESR.

Samsung lcd LN40B530P7F 1.5 years old, try to turn on and only get red blinking light. Checked capacitors and none are blown. What else could be the problem?

How about the output voltages: standby 5v, PS-ON signal to turn on the 12v/24vdc power supply section? It may be in safety shutdown mode due to the detection of shorted circuits.

My TX-47 was/is in power saver mode. A few days

This is known as SLEEP MODE / STANDY MODE problem.

Simple solutions:
1. Get a power surge protector / strip.
2. Plug your TV power cord to the power surge.
3.Then turn-on your TV using the remote control2_bing.gif. Just in case it won't go all the way to normal state.
4. Turn-off the switch of your power surge like 5 times with an interval of 3-5 seconds.
5. Then repeat step 3 and 4.
6. These step is done to over-ride the sleep mode.

Sony KV-27V66 Tv Problem

I would have someone check the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply or deflection circuits. You can check them with an ESR meter. Any good technician should have one. I bet one or two of the caps are leaky.

No Power / LED ERROR CODE

If there is a failure in any of the scan circuits, the set will go in to protect mode. This is most probably what is happening.

Before starting to work on a TV set is is best to have the full shop service manual with the schamatics, with all the required service details about the set.

The fault can be any of the components in the associated cricuits. This can be a bad cap, open resistor, or a failed semiconductor.

In the case where a set is going in to the protect mode, it is difficult to take voltage readings, because the power supply is being partialy shut down. The parts of the supply that runs the high voltage and scan circuits are shut down, and also the uPC makes sure that the CRT is biased off to protect it.

It is most common that capacitors go out of specs with age. To properly test the caps you would need a cap an ESR meter. The other way to test caps is to replace them until you have worked out all the defective ones. This is shotgunning for a bad cap. With this method, you an end up changing a lot of caps, and they were not the fault.

In the case of the other types of components a DVM can be used to check them. IC's must be changed to properly check them. It is impossible to properly check an IC just with a DVM.

This is an idea of what troubleshooting is.

Clicking

problem is almost definatly power suppy related. get out your DMM and measure the voltages in the power supply. too much current to the unit may cause the exact problem you described. Carefully check all the caps in the power supply and horiz output stage for high ESR. You will need an ESR meter, or a low impedance reactance meter to check these. If not, you will have to replace the caps one by one to find the fault, if it is a bad cap.
