Have you tried batteries in something else to check they're ok, and inserted correctly if still no good perhaps return as it will still be under warranty?

i think that the charger has just as much to do with it as the batteries. When I first got my *ist D, I regularly got about 400 shots per charge. I bought another charger and the number of shots per charge went down to 100 to 150. I recently purchased the La Crosse charger from Thomas Distributing and I am back up to about 400 shots per charge. By the way this charger is wonderful. It actually provides you with quantitative information about the charging of your batteries with LCDs that are dedicated to each cell instead of a simple LED. If you are serious about NIMH batteries I suggest you give it a look

If your batteries are new, within their first two charges, do not put to much stock in the performance you are getting. When I got my *ist D the first set of batteries I used was an old set of 2000mah Digipowers, and I was shocked. I got nearly 400 photos, lots of them with flash, and lots and lots of review on the LCD. I recently purchased some Kodak 2100mah batteries and for the first two charges could not get more than 30 pictures in either the camera or flash. They are now on the third charge and seem to be lasting much longer. I have read it takes about 5 charges for them to reach their peak performance. Also, if your batteries have been discharged by sitting in the cupboard, I understand they have to go through this conditioning again. If your batteries are older and have been continually used I might worry.

I had a similar problem with my istD until I finally managed to fix it.
Try this:
Take off the lens and gently lift the reflex mirror with you finger nail.
Very gently prise open the secondary mirror concealed underneath it to check that it moves freely.
Now take a pencil eraser and rub the electrical contacts around the lens mouth on the body.
Give them a good rub and blow out any resulting dust.
Pop the lens back on and take a few shots to confirm that autofocus now works perfectly (make sure you have fresh batteries)

If possible, check the charger output or the charge status of the batteries with a voltmeter. That will narrow the field for you. If the charger and batteries seem OK, your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.
