Same problem. Did not drop it. I see that many many people have the same problem. Looks like a design flaw.Same problem. Did not drop it. I see that many many people have the same problem. Looks like a design flaw.

Canon SD900 - Lens will not retract. The camera has not been dropped nor has it had anything happen to it to cause the lens to get "stuck out". When you try to power on the camera, you get "lens error, restart camera". I've restarted, also tried removing the battery and the lense will not retract. Canon SD900 - Lens will not retract. Same problen, however, I didn't drop the camera. Just faulty design on canons part and though they are aware of the problem they continue to seel these ^*(^$%^* cameras. Too expensive to fix as the problem will re accur. Bad camera!Same problen, however, I didn't drop the camera. Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
this is very common has the camera been near the ocean??? it does not have to be dropped to give you this error. repair on you lens runs 85.00 for repair. or a new lens for 125.00

same thing just happened to me today. the little girl that I babysit dropped it about 1 foot to the rug on the ground, not a hard drop at all. so i tried taking out the batteries and hit it on the table (read on other sites) then i gently turned the end of the lens (my lens was stuck out) counter clock wise and it clicked and then worked.
Hey GeorgiaPlum,
What is most likely happening is there is damage to the lens or the lens mechanism and you should have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. I will say that digital camera repairs often exceed the value of the camera, but it can't hurt to get an estimate done. I hope this helps!
Manually rotating sensor rotor inside camera and cleaning gear fixed the Canon "lens error" for me. I placed instructions with photo's here: http://www.avh.dds.nl/Fix-Canon-SD600-Lens-Error/
