some advice:
Although you will find MANY people there that solved their problem by banging the camcorder, HARD, please don't try this first.
First, open it up and take the tape out, VERY CAREFULLY! You may have one or two parts that have come loose in there, specifically a small black roller and a white clip that locks that roller on. You will see pictures of where to look and what to look for on that website. If you turn the camera upside down and shake it, gently, they may well fall out. BE CAREFUL!!! That 2 cent white plastic part and 10 cent roller cost $25 plus shipping from Sony!!! If they're there, don't lose them! Thee is ample explanation on the website about how to re-install them if this is your problem. If not, almost 80% of people on that website fixed it by banging it, give it a try!
btw, sONY REFUSES TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS OBVIOUS DEFECT! tHEIR SOLUTION IS TO SEND IT IN FOR A MINIMUM $211 REPAIR BILL, BEFORE PARTS! BOYCOTT SONY!

Had the same error message on my TRV-720, and could not come up with a solution for weeks until I found this website:
http://www.protechcam.com/wwwboard/messages/127.html
Now
the fix you will not believe, nor did I at first, but requires you to
power off the unit completely and "Smack it" a few times fairly hard.
Now you may do this at your risk, but I swear it fixed mine and all the other people listed at the above web site.
I thought it was a joke - but it works!!
Good Luck!

Take the battery off for :60 seconds.
The problem may disappear on reboot.
(It works with my Z1-U)

i need the same help my handcam error C:31:23 is on (stooped sony)
I have the same error of C:31:23 and it isn't resolved by taking the battery on and off. Sometimes taking the tape in and out resolves it but that is not practical and you loose the moment!
