This set has two boards in it, not including the panel which has the ballast attached. The power supply creates the voltage, one of the voltages may be missing. If the power supply is working correctly, then, the problem may be in the main. The main is the control of the set. On an LCD set, this problem seems to be easy to diagnose, but, it could be any of the three circuits that cause it.

Hitachi 46w500 went off tonight during storms, low voltage, wont turn back on

There might be a failure on the power supply or horizontal section of the TV even if you see some light inside the TV. Some of the voltages could be missing and that is why the TV fails to power up.
If you know how to use a multimeter, you could check all the fuses from your power supply.
Unplug your TV from the main AC line if you intend to do it yourself.
You will know how much you can do or it might safer to contact a tech.

Tv went dead then we smelled "electricity" smell like something blew. tv is completely dead. any options?

sounds like a blown internal fuse. unless you are savvy with a soldering iron you'll need to take it to a TV repair man. i assume its out of its warranty period?

My 6 to 7 yr old television suddenly went dead

There is a board that manages the power going into your tv I would check around with local mom and pop tv reapir shops. The board is not expensive its the labor I am not sure where you live but I am sure there are local techs that work on flat panel tv's. They are pretty affordable these days. Most flat panel tv's are rated for 60,000 hrs as there life span. Hope that helps
