I have this problem but i think (not sure) the bios is completely gone because here on FIXYA i found this, i tried Fn+Esc+Power and after blinking 3 lights, nothing happened and it said : Run setup, when i hit F2 and it says: Entering Setup, but nothing happens. So nothing is happening except light blinking. Whole laptop is opened, only motherboard and compulsory parts are connected to turn it on. how can i reflash it? can you please send me the link or file which i can load directly from flash. Because its stuck on DELL page. Please help, i m stuck with this laptop.
Regards

The bios is working fine its the little program that runs the system like run the setup, entering set up is not running because the file are not there you need to use and run setup from a cd
Had this exact problem on the same model (Dell Inspiron 1000) laptop. Solution was simple: remove battery, problem goes away. I guess the battery was so far gone it was hanging the BIOS on startup.

BIOS Master Password Generator for Laptops click the link and enter your service tag #. Usually found on the bios screen or under the laptop on a little white sticker. If it doesn't work you'll have to contact dell for removal.
open the back panel of your your laptop and try to find out the Cmos batter inside it, remove it for atleat 2-3mins and put it back, or may find written RTC on the board with two small dot on it, just take screw drive and touch both the dot for a while. by doing this your password must have gone. But remember to remove your backup battery and adapter before doing all this.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware and software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware/software, disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing your computer, press F8 to slct Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode
it could be a memory (RAM) problem. Many Dell's have a Diagnostic partition on the Hard Drive, accessed by F12 at initial boot up. If yours has this, run a complete diagnostic and see if there are any errors.
Try to reboot in safe mode using "last working configuration" and do an evaluation and see what comes up
this sounds like a dying battery. But before doing so, try this:
right click on your desktop, select properties->Screen Saver->Power
create a new power scheme and call it something like 'battery drain'. Under 'Running on Batteries', set everything to 'never' and save.
run some power draining programs, eg. playing music CD at full blast to drain the power. Or if you worry about possibly damaging your CD, you can simply turn the screen brightness to the max and wait.
if the laptop still works after the battery level indicator is showing 0%, it means that your battery has not been fully charged - although the laptop 'thinks' that it is. keep draining the battery till it dies off, and perform and full battery charge. Your battery should be fine now
Personally, I'd drain my battery every now and then just to make sure that it's getting fully charged.
Try an external mouse. You might have to turn off the touchpad in BIOS (F2 key on boot will get you into setup). Look for Mouse/Touchpad under 'Post Behavior' or perhaps elsewhere (differently displayed in various BIOS setups).
ok , i have had this problem on bolth my dell inspiron laptops , on a 6400 and a 1525 . the 6400 had the lower left corner all dark and the 1525 was split right down the center . i fix bolth of em in a really simple way , turn on ur pc and go into windows , press the blue Fn button and the down arrow untill ur brightness from ur backlight is completely down . keep it that way with the screen on with a screen saver for about one hour then turn brightness back up but not all the way up cuz in my case the problem hapened again , but when i keep it just one click darker , boom problem fixed . from what i can figuere out is that the inverter aint powerfull enought to power the backlight and tends to over heat , so keeping the backlight a bit lower tend the keep em ok
What kind of warranty did you purchase? most of the new laptops come with a 1 year warranty, so the replacement should be covered.
As far as whether or not it is normal, it does happen from time to time that the parts of a laptop are defective which is the reason for the warranty. I manage about 450 Dell laptops and desktops and i have noticed that I have issues with about 2-3% right out of the box. Dells tech support has been very good to me and they have taken care of the issues as they come up.
