My vet suggested that I buy a long leash for my dog. Why do I need such a long one?

Before you actually start leash training, I recommend attaching a leash to your dogs collar while at home and letting your puppy get used to the leash being there. After a few days, you can then begin leash training. During the beginning stages, you should walk your puppy on the leash without pulling/jerking. If your puppy starts to pull on the leash, I suggest standing still. This lets your puppy know that you do not want them to pull on the leash. Always use positive reinforcement while leash training. That depends on the type of dog you have and how much he weighs. The retractable leashes are great but you need to have the right leash or it may not be strong enough to hold your dog. In general, small is for dogs up to 26lb, medium for dogs up to 44lb and large up to 110 lbs.

A good old fashion leashis usually the best option. Theretractable kind has been known to harm small dogs and malfunction when youneed to restrain your dog the most. Also, retractable leashes are known to hurt dog owners as well.
