A hands-free leash allows you to keep hold of your pet without having to hold the leash on your hands. Usually it's a belt that you can adjust and then if you are walking or running, you can keep your hands free and your pet is still attached to you.

I honestly don't understand why baby leashes are so controversial. Can someone enlighten me?

I have three year old twin girls and I always get nasty looks from bypassers when i have them hooked up with their leash. I think it's because people automatically think of dogs when they see a leash and feel that you are some how degrading your child. I see it in a purely practical way. I only have so many eyes and so many hands and with two inquisitive children it is impossible to keep up with them in a public place. I would rather they be teathered to me, with the ability to move around and explore than be strapped into a stroller and not be able to move.

How do I leash train my puppy?

Before you actually start leash training, I recommend attaching a leash to your dogs collar while at home and letting your puppy get used to the leash being there. After a few days, you can then begin leash training. During the beginning stages, you should walk your puppy on the leash without pulling/jerking. If your puppy starts to pull on the leash, I suggest standing still. This lets your puppy know that you do not want them to pull on the leash. Always use positive reinforcement while leash training. Below I have attached a link to a site that helped me leash train my dog.

What are some of the negative aspects expected from a leather leash?

Generally speaking, leather leashes can be more expensive than nylon versions. Over time, leather can stretch, causing the leash to become weaker and slightly longer in length. However, the greatest disadvantage to a leather leash is that your dog can chew it, thus damaging the leash.

Is it ok to use a chain/metal leash on my dog?

I recommend staying away from chain leashes. Not only are they ineffective for training, but they may also injure your pet.

What types of materials are pet leashes made from?

Leashes can be made from a variety of materials; however nylon and leather are the most common. Some people prefer leather leashes, since nylon ones can become rough on the users hands over time.

What is a retractable leash?

Retractable leashes can usually extend up to 25-30 feet long. They are ideal for leash training puppies; however they may not be the best solution for keeping your pet under control.

My vet suggested that I buy a long leash for my dog. Why do I need such a long one?

It's actually just kinder to your dog to get a longer leash. That way you give them loads of space to run around and feel free but you still act like a responsible owner. I think long leashes - the retractable ones that you can pull back in if you need to, are just great.
