Make sure you are using HE (high efficiency) clothes detergeant if you have a front load or he machine, and then only about two tablespoons per load. Otherwise, oversudsing will run over the tub and water will leak out the bottom once the bubbles recede causing it to appear like you have a leak. Just something to check before you have to pay a service fee to a repair man.

I have a whirlpool washer in my rented apartment. My daughter turned the water fill switch and instead of placing it on a level, like say large or medium, placed it in between cycles. Basically, the

report the problem to the landlord and ask to have it fixed
the machine belongs to him and repairs are his responsibility as is excess water and damaged carpets after you inform him
might be best if you place his machine in a safe place and install your own machine

Washer just keeps filling and never advances on large and medium loads only

Your drain hose is pushed too far down into the drain so when you select the larger load sizes the water is being siphoned out as it goes in due to the pressure differential.

Check water valve may not be shutting off .
Check water level switch , or hose going to it from tub must be air tight may have pin hole in it.
Water level switch is the one that says small , medium or large on some washers.

Fill will not stop

you may have a problem with your pressure switch. or sometimes they call it the water level switch.

try to use it in the small level and see if it would stop filling around medium or large quantities of water.

if it would stop filling , then replace the water level sensor.

tnx 4 using fixya,

Overflowed on Large load size

i think the water level sensor tube got filled when you had it on it's side, then after the first spin and drain cycle, the tube was again cleared out and ready for real action.

Over filling

pressure switch pipe is either blocked or damaged, the weight of the water pushes air up the pipe to activate the switch to stop the water filling, for some reason its not doing so,

this is a small thin pipe that goes from a point in the machine low down, to a little round flat object (normally) up near the top of the machine inside up near the top

drain the machine and clear out the pipe at the bottom where it joins  the drum or whatever, make sure joints are made good
