Microwave door does not latch; oven does not work

We have a Sharp Model R-1481 Carosel Microwave. The latch on the door does not catch, and as a result, the oven does not operate. The "hooks" simply move up and down, no resistance. I cannot find screws or any obvious way to open the door to see what is within and what might be wrong with the latch mechanism. Any ideas?

We have the service manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

You will need the
free Acrobat Reader to view or print it in case you don't have it.

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

Hello My name is Mohamed. I have a sharp microwave oven model R-316FSU, I am having trouble opening the door. The latch seems to stick. How can I fix it?

Door catches.

One of the latches may be damaged or misaligned and is not lifting the other latch clear of the housing. Remove from any power source, remove the cover of the cabinet. Slacken off the clamp mechanism and ease the clamp over the guide to allow the door to open. When the door levers are in place, the door may be easily adjusted by slackening off the screws that clamp the door catch/actuators in place whilst holding the door closed and then tightening the screws. The rear of the door may be adjusted by slackening the lower door hinge screws and adjusting as required.
I hope that helps.

How to install latch and spring in microwave door

You need to know where the 'catches' are inside the choke cover on the door to remove it carefully without breaking anything or marring the cover. You might get inside and find that the post for mounting the return spring has broken and that is part of the outer door panel.

Door won't latch/microwave won't turn on

The door does come apart. Open the door and where the hinges are, there are openings where the hinges enter the door, this plastic piece (goes all the way around the door) With a small flat blade screws driver VERY carefully pry it (plastic) off, once off, check the latch end for the spring, typical failure for a Sharp is the little tab that the spring hooks to on the door, the only way to repair this so it will last is to replace the door frame. they are not too expensive, about $50 or so Part# FCOVB166KIT
is the door frame assy

Sharp microwave R1940

The latch head (the assembly with the hook-like parts sticking out) also has a spring which secures it to the inner door panel. The inner door panel or latch head has a broken spring mount. To repair this, the door panels will have to be separated. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find a helpful exploded view diagram of this model at http://www3.sears.com You can order parts for Sharp models from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com.

Microwave door doesn't shut

I answered this personally via e-mail (and I do not mind peopke writing me personally). I think you may have a broken tab which holds the door latch head spring in place.
