The person that set the passwords is no longer with us and we need to do a factory reset or recover the passwords in order to set the configuration we need. We can connect with console connection.
In case you still need to do this, or in case someone else stumbles on this problem and needs an answer, below is the the solution.
Connect to the MX device via console cable and recycle power.
Interrupt the boot process by pressing "q" followed by the "Enter" key when prompted.
at the boot> prompt enter the following command:
boot> boot OPT+=default (NOTE: This is case sensitive) and press "ENTER"
Presto, your devices boot with factory defaults.
