I'm having problems getting my computer to recognize my camera. I'm on a dell laptop with Windows XP Pro. I've tried connecting the chord to different USB ports but the computer hasn't recognized it. I've downloaded pictures off this camera onto this computer before in the past without problems so I'm not sure what could be going wrong. Any assistance would be appreciated, thank you.
Same thing happened to my Powersgot SD450. I'll tell you what the Best Buy Geek Squad guy told me: If it's off warranty, the repair will be about as much as a new camera. But, for $20, you can buy a USB memory card reader that will still read the card.
I bought the card reader. It works great.

Is the USB-compatible drive recognized when connected to some other computer? If OK, then the drive is OK.
Is _ANY_ USB device (memory-stick, camera, mouse, keyboard, printer) recognized when connected to any of the USB ports on your computer?
If not, then the USB device-drivers for Windows have not been loaded.
Drastic: backup all your data files, bookmarks, and music, to an external hard-drive, and reinstall Windows from the Dell-provided "System Restore" set of CD-ROMs.
You mentioned that you uninstalled the unknown device from the Device manager. If you uninstall it then connected your usb flash drive you will see an error again on your device manager. This means that the driver for your usb port is not properly installed.
To install it, visit dell website, look for the model of your machine and locate the driver, download it then install from your machine.
This solution worked for me when I got the USB device not recognized message: http://www.infobarrel.com/USB_Port_Repair It can be quite frustrating. I've heard that older computers are more likely to have the USB device not recognized message.
