Sure you can get it done at the nearest electronic service centre unless you wantt it to be done at the authorised service centre. But if you can be confident check your bateries, check your belts within the set and replace them with the correct size. It is possible to get this done if you can do it patiently and maybe a helping hand. Good luck Good day
Please do a good cleaning off the head the rollers and the transport section., This will remove off all the static noise to be relayed to the head. make sure you use a reliable solvent to do all the clean up. make sure the reel and drives are working fine. also the pinch rollers are running without chewing the tape. If so replace the rollers and the belts. Hope this helps.Good day
sounds like a belt slipping try renewing them they are fairly cheap to replace.sony tend to be very reliable but this is quite an old item now and belts degrade with time and use.farr64
This sounds like the internal drive belt has broken and the mechanism is not in a "final" position. The noise you hear is hte motor trying to get the mechanism back to a known condition. This should be a simple repair for any audio repair shop. Expect a parts cost in the $5 range. Add in the local labor rate for the total repair cost.

The "solution" by techman appears to be entirely inappropriate because the link he posts takes one to a company that repairs data storage units, NOT Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorders.
