the problem is most likely a defective light engine, it is a very commen problem with these tvs. hitachi is not very forthcoming with information or help unless your still under warrenty, i have talked with a few people about this and have found a lawyer starting a class action suit, if interested here is a segment of another conversation with all the info to get you started. " let other Hitachi TV owners know about the Class Action Lawsuit against Hitachi regarding the defective optical light engine. They need to call the Law Firm in Dallas Texas, HORP & B, that you mentioned is handling the case and talk to Victor @ 1-877-308-7900. They are taking documentation and cases regarding this suit and people that feel like they have been treated unfairly wherein Hitachi denied sending them a new optical light engine @ n/c need to call and state their case. "
good luck with your problems

Read the info from this website and see if that could help you to fix your TV. All rear projection TVs behave the same way regardless who manufactured them.
Before trying to make any adjustments, put a mark on the original position of that screen control potentiometer just in case you have to put it back to where it was.
