When I press play, the display reads, PLAY for a couple of seconds, then HIFI for a couple of seconds, then _ _ : _ _ Same thing for FF and REW (no HIFI appearing) When I pop in a cassette it sounds normal, like it's about to play and then _ _ : _ _
L would have a look inside to see if when a tape is inserted it loads and will ff and rew, if the transport that moves the tape has failed it will account for what is happening.

Not likely. They probably just need to be cleaned and re-alligned. Rates vary, but our shop charges $20 to do that.

VCR is set with blank tape..Bring up vcr control on TV with television set on Chanel #3, go to menu
Follows procedure for progamming date,time start,time finish,chanel and.speed and single recording.finally click on menu and turn vcr off. Vcr lights indicate set for taping,,.Does no start to tape at requested time and lights indication taping ready stays on ??????

I have the exact same issue, DVD don't play. The VCR works & the cds will play on DVD side, but it will not play DVD. Warranty is expired and we barely used it.

I have a Zenith XBR413 that I have a problem with when I copy from VCR tapes to DVD-R discs. After I copy them, I can finalize the disc using the SETUP button on the remote and then choosing the very bottom disc icon at the bottom of the menu screen. It then leads you through the finalization procedure. But the disc will still not play on any DVD player but the XBR413

You will have to go into the dvd menu and finalize the disc for it to play on any other player. Check in your manual for more information.
