In addition to the suggestions of running a sypware and a registry scanner you should also try: - Scanning for root kits, free one here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/39798/lng/us/tpl/v5 - Make sure your anti-virus scanner is current, functioning and has performed a total scan recently. - Just before you try to browse the Internet hit the Ctrl, Alt and Del keys and select task manager: -Check the Physical memory available section and make sure you have at least 80000 (80MB) free. Anything less would cause the same problem. -Check the CPU usage, anything over 40% over time would cause sluggishness as well. Also before running the spyware, virus, root-kit and registry scanners it is important to ensure you have a good backup of your data. Running a registry editor in particular is a dangerous thing to do, especially if your registry is damaged or bloated as yours may be.
Easy fix!!! First, download Adaware (it's free!!) and install and run, make sure that you get rid of any spyware. Next, goto: Start -> Run and type in "msconfig" (without quotes) In the General tab, make sure that the "Selective Start up" is checked off Now, goto the last tab labelled "Start Up" If there is anything that is in CAPITAL LETTERS, make sure that you uncheck the box next to it as this will disable the start up. In most cases, files starting up in all capital letters are spyware/viruses. As a matter of fact, you can actually uncheck everything in there. (I'm sure that you don't use your printer every time that you turn it on, or your IM, or your photo editor, etc.) You can start these programs from the All Programs menu...the start up is just to make them load faster WHEN you actually want to use them, but slows down the start up of your PC. Afterwards, goto: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup Run this program and get rid of all your crap on there (I bet you have about 3-4G of trash to get rid of...this will take about 1-4hrs depending on your machine) Then, goto System Tools again, but this time run Disk Defragmenter.
You know, I can accept a "average" rating if you tried it out and it didn't work up to par...but if your just rating it to rate it...Then I'm sure that most of us would rather that you didn't rate it at all.
What I posted is the exact procedure I use to clean most people's PC's with...and have never had a problem in speeding the PC up after updating.
I've added my own ratings...I only gave a good rating to asoke due to saying that he thought it was a Mac, which everyone knows that Compaq's are either Windows or Linux...and if they are here, then it's most likely Windows.
sinder, on the otherhand, added rootkit detections which I completely forgot about, but if you have a router or a good firewall then rootkits are the least of your problems.
