TV comes on and goes off by itself

The TV will go off for no apparent reason. Sometimes it has to be turned back on with the remote and sometimes it immediately comes back on. The set will also turn itself on in the middle of the night. I have eliminated remote malfunction.

In order to determine whether it is the TV itself or something in the room that is causing the problem, place an object in front of the infrared eye on the TV. This is usually a transparent red plastic window on the front of the TV somewhere. Verify that it is covered by trying (and hopefully failing) to use the remote. If the TV continues to turn itself on and off, then it is the TVs internal circuitry. If the behavior stops, then it is something in the room. One of the more surprising causes for behavior like this is sunlight hitting rotating ceiling fans -- the light reflects off the fan at just the right frequency to fool the TV. I mention this so you don't limit yourself to only thinking that it must be either the TV or the remote.
