Wal-Mart carries a heated bowl manufactured by Farm Innovators. It is relatively inexpensive, has an anti-chew cord protector and a built in thermostat. I will send you the link for this product; however you may want to do a little comparison shopping of your own.

What are the benefits of using an elevated dog bowl?

There are plenty of benefits for using elevated bowls for dogs:
  • For older dogs, eating from an elevated bowl puts less strain on the joints and hip and allow the dogs to use a more proper posture when eating.
  • Elevated bowls are more stable compared to bowls that are on the floor.
  • The dog owner doesn't have to bend down as much to fill up the bowl. This can be really beneficial for older people with back problems.
  • Elevated bowls allow for better digestion because they minimize the amount of air that dogs swallow when they chew their food.
  • Elevated bowls are cleaner compared to bowls that are on the floor. Also, dogs tend to make less mess when drinking out of an elevated bowl compared to ground-level bowls.
  • It is recommended by veterinarians for large and old dogs.

There are so many styles and types of dog bowls available, why when I ask my vet do they recommend a simple stainless steel bowl?

Stainless steel bowls will never lose their popularity. They are a standard dog bowl that you cannot go wrong with. They decrease the possibility of contact dermatitis, they last forever and they are pore-free meaning that it is highly unlikely that they will harbor any harmful bacteria. Stainless steel bowls are also very easy to wash.

Why would someone use a heated pet bowl?

Heated bowls are ideal for outdoor pets. In order to keep your dog/cats water from freezing in cold temperatures, heated bowls are the only way to go. Make sure to look for one with a "anti-chew" cord protector to further ensure your pets safety.

What type of dog bowl is best suited for an older dog?

I recommend an elevated dog bowl. Bending and ducking to eat can be painful for elderly dogs. They may suffer from neck/joint pain. Using an elevated feeder can help relieve a significant amount of strain on your pets joints.

My dog has a plastic dog bowl and I find that the water in it goes a funny color

Plastic dog bowls are quite cheap however I wouldn't recommend using them. Plastic absorbs toxins and this could cause health problems for your dog. Also dogs are natural chewers and they will more than likely chew a plastic bowl when left to their own devises. I would invest a bit more money on a metal dish, they are clean, long lasting, indestructible and safe.
