I get to start up screen and it asked me to register windows!
I have had this laptop (model elitegroup a530 pc notebook) since 2002. No problems bar a power lead fault, nothing technical. Now when I get to start up screen it says the was a prblem reading the licence of windows xp and i need to activate it - after 6 yrs??
I phoned the microsft customer services but every time i tried adding the installtion key it said there was a fault with it - 3 times!
I want to avoid anyting that will wipe the data as i am a photographer and have 3 yrs worth of my work on there.

Sounds like you have a bad LCD screen, hook up a computer monitor on the video output located on the back of your Laptop, if the monitor produces a nice clean picture, suspect the LCD screen on your Laptop.
EliteGroup a530 pc is old thats why the company doesnt release its drivers. they are stored builtin and are ready to install when a new os is installed .

Try putting your windows cd in before you boot up to see, when it starts up if your laptop is set up to boot from cd.
If not, can you press F2 or DEL on boot up to see if you can enter the bios screen.
Come back here.
instead of using your laptops windows zero wireless configuration, you can purchase a seperate wireless pcmcia card or usb dongle type
that uses the security you require within the relevant company's software & drivers.
