If you want to transfer video using a firewire you need a 1394 connection on your PC. The Sony DCR-HC21 will also allow you transfer video using a usb cable.

I think you are using Windows Vista and facing problem to connect Sony DCR-HC53 Download Update for Picture Motion Browser software at Sony Support. You need iLINK cable to transfer movie data in to computer. iLINK cable is shown in below picture. You can have more info HERE about iLINK connectivity if you are running Windows XP in your laptop.
You will need a DV cable. This cable did not come with your camcorder.
You will also need software for the transfer process. Windows Movie
Maker can do this There is a free demo version at www.scenealyzer.com,
but it will leave a watermark on your video if you don't pay for it.
You might try Windows Movie Maker first if you already have it.
Once you have captured the video on your computer, you cannot just burn
it to a DVD as a file if you want to play it in DVD players. This too
requires special software.
