The Ilo has a bad power supply. There are two capacitors on the power supply, they are the large ones located where the power jack plugs in. Look at these capacitors, if they are swollen then replace them. You ca find them at radio shack or an other electronic supply store. The power supply will cause all kinds of problems like the one you describe.
Your dvd writer is bad you can save money and replace it with a pc writer from wal-mart take ilo apart and replace it with a 16x speed a 8x speed will not work unplug strap anp power. put in new one i set my writer on top of ilo as fan inside is not big enough to keep writer cool if you put it back inside will burn up new writer the same way

Re: won't do anything
Take out the plug and let the set stand for about 30 mins.if that does not work take it to a tech for repairs.the problem is in the power supply or the motor.good luck.

I was having the same problem. My DVDR04 was working fine. And after about four months of not using it I desired to use it. Turned it on and everything was in black in white. After searching on line and e-mailing Ilo which I never got an answer. I finally tried using an RCA video (Yellow) cable on the line out video jacks, replacing the line out S-Video jack/cable and it worked fine back in color right away.
I'd take it back before you can't and get your money back. I bought two ILO's !one was a DVDR04 and the other was a DVDR05 and they didn't last even 6 mo. and all ILO has to say is pay us and it will work again but for how long, Until they want more money. Ithink they rig them to fail in the programing so they can charge for more programing.
I have ILO dvd ro5/zu Burner walmart cheapy and I read Capacitors for power supply go bad and leak there are 2 (fuhjyyu 2200uf 10volt) also it runs very very hot so I put in an old computer fan to cool it down works great now, problems with clock flashing and humming noise while recording and playing back. It still has a little hum but other than that it works great 3-4 years old over 150 dvd's burned.
The laser is either dirty or is starting to go.These lasers in this model usually only last two years. To clean but a commercial disc cleaner philips or Maxell work good in this model.Put a drop of rubbing alcohol on brushes this helps clean laser.I would do this every 15 hours of use .The best way to clean laser is to rub gently with a Qtip soaked in rubbing alcohol but this requires some technical knowledge for you have to open burner. If you attempt this make certain electrical plug is pulled lasers cause nasty burns.
If laser is going you can replace the burner/loader unit, this model uses a 411s or 451s Liteon burner. The 401s and 813s will also work without problem.
your dvd writer is bad you will have to replace it believe me i now what im talking about i have went through 4 ilo's did the same thing plus 100's of differnt name brand dvd's
