Could be the power board or main board defective, but I suggest you do firmware update first. Go to http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=KDL42V4100&LOC=3#div_pos_30 download the software.

TV in standby mode and will not reset

I would initially try unplugging the TV, allowing it to sit for a few minutes, and replugging it in. If it still will not power on you will need to contact Sony for support or repair. If it is pretty new you may want to check with the store where you purchased it.

Sony Bravia TV automtaically goes on standby.

Probably the main board. This has a 1 year mfc parts and lobor warr. I would contact Sony for the nearest auth servicer. If you open it you will void the warranty.
