PRINTER ERROR Xerox Phaser 7400 /DXF Laser Error 940

keep getting report fault error 940 every couple of months

  • Anonymous Jul 09, 2008

Users complain printer will grind but still prints then displays a 940 error. The service manual indicates a 940 error is related to the waste toner auger, motor and/or sensors. Toner appears to backup in tubing causing cyan chute to overflow. I've cleaned up the toner, manually emptied the waste toner reservoir & manually rotated the waste toner auger motor. Printer will work fine for a day or two then again displays the 940 error. I'm going to try replacing the waste toner auger motor even though it appears to function normally.

There is a tiny little magnet that falls off and/or has reportedly been put on backwards (fell off is what happened to me) on the auger assembly. It's near the black auger chute on the end of a shaft. It's tiny--a little bigger than a grain of rice. I had to replace the auger shaft assembly but if you can find the magnet, you can super glue it back on.

The grinding noise is caused by a worn or bad gear in the drum unit.

(if you are refilling the toner cartridges you may be overfilling, causing the gears to grind).

Also make sure the Imaging Unit basket is properly latched, some machines have a tendency to work loose over time.

I have Xerox Phaser 7400 with an error 928 we changed the fuser 2 weeks ago now the error has come back

Error 928 refers to the fuser motor failing. Problem could be with fuser motor, motor drive board or engine board.
One other possible cause would be if you are sending too thick a card stock through the machine, this can cause drag on the fuser which the machine interprets as a motor failure.
Hope this helps.
