Cleaning the machine. pipe???

Hi there My washing machine obviously keeps on getting blocked somewhere because my washing comes out very smelly. I have lost my manual. Am I supposed to clean some part of it. I can see no simple area. Do I have to remove the back, because that seems to be a bit over the top. Please help. Many thanks. Ian

From clogging of the filter the pump burned out. The engineer said if you regularly wash dog bedding or anything very hairy/fluffy you should clean out the filter but it isn't very accessible.

Are you using liquid detergent? this has the effect when used for long periods of making the machine smell like drains. if so, put on a boil wash with no clothes and revert to powder detergent. there is a filter which needs clearing if drain is slow.to access, remove bottom panel at back. filter is located in large pipe leading from tub to pump on the lhs. undo this pipe at the tub end and the filter is inside. some water will come out so be prepared. unplug from mains first

I have a hotpoint WMD 960 WASHING MACHINE and it smells

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
Probably stale water or smelly lint/fluff.
I would gently suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters and many machines will not even go to spin or release the door lock if there is any water still left inside.
Here are my guidance notes for checking both the drain filter and the drain motor ;-0)
-------------------------------------

If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!) and most are held in by a round cover/knob. Sometimes the filter will not come out with the cover and you will have to persuade it to come out to play!

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT!
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. If it doesn't work then the motor is malfunctioning!

Hope the filter is the problem and good luck!

Smells like old smelly socks

this might be coming from the rubber door seal clean it all the way round make sure holes at bottom are not blocked and the rubber door seal is all clean. also clean the draw so there is no power left in there and it is all clean. also a good thing to do is run it though a cleaning cycle with normal detergent at max temperature that the machine can do. hope this helps.

Smelly front loader washing machine. Clothes come out smelly too. How did I fix the problem???

You may have to do this 2 times and you will never find this in any manual. Use 1/4 cup "Powdered" Dishwashing soap and 1 cup of bleach in an empty tub cycle. Run a load of older dark clothes or non flammable rags FIRST after doing this the first time. If they come out with streaks run the cycle of 1/4 cup Powdered dishwashing soap and 1 cup bleach again. Same routine after 2nd cleaning cycle... dark clothes check for anything out of the ordinary. You should not have to do it a 3rd time unless your machine is really gunked up. Hopefully your using HE type soaps in your front loader. Non HE laundry soaps will cause the smelly machine also.

Thanks for using FixYa.

The detergent is not making contact with the clothes in the drum.

Hi.It sounds like the internal workings are blocked. It's a GOOD idea to occasionaly put the machine through a hot wash cycle, as hot a program as it has. Using the cooler wash programs is good but it does lead up to a build up of Body Fats (Ugh!) and a good really hot wash occasionally will flush and prevent this build up in the machine's internal workings and prevent a very expensive call-out charge. Once every three months or so will do the trick!........Let me know if it works?......Cornwellnet (UK)

Smelly drum

is the water draining ok and is washer spining ok?,if this problem is recent a small kids sock or something could be sitting somewhere beside element or in drain pipework, first you could try a 90degree wash with nothing in drum, this will get rid of any undissolved detergent/powder which can stink sometimes if low temp washes are used alot

Smells coming from machine, leaving washed item's smelly

Get whirlpools new affresh washer tablets. They clean the inside off the machine and kills mold ect. and if used regularly it keeps your washer smelling fresh. They are designed for front load machines but work great in top loaders too. They are available on line at any parts store and are around 8 bucks.

I cant get the filter out of my washing machine help please

you probably have something like a bra wire jammed in there. no option but to pull real hard with a pair of pliers.
smell is not caused by filter. often smell is due to using liquid detergent. after you have done filter, put on the hottest wash and change to powder detergent

I cant get the filter out of my washing machine help please

Sometimes a bigger object might block the filter knob, and make it impossible to screw out. Then the only way is to remove the end of the sump hose attached to the filter and remove the stuck object.
(In my filter this object was an Umbraco key) :-)
