Knock sensor may be bad causing idle to retard to stop spark knock . Carbon buildup in the cylinders on piston heads or around the valves can cause retardation as well as overheating .

Im not retarded im a girl n obvious if a car dont move forward or backwards kinda seems like it has something to do with transmission. You know the the mechanism by which power is transmitted from an engine to the wheels of a motor vehicle.

These codes have to do with the CVVT(continuously variable valve timing)solenoid. I guess it is a 2.4 liter engine, the solenoid is located right above the power steering pump at the #1 cylinder in the cylinder head. If it is the 3.5 liter it is located on top of each cylinder and is accessed after the intake plenum is removed. Either way, the solenoid controls valve timing of the exhaust cam via the solenoid which uses oil pressure to advance or retard the timing. The first step is to verify proper weight of oil and level. If the engine is over due for service, get it done. If the oil is not an issue, then the solenoid is becoming sluggish in advancing or retarding the camshaft and should be replaced.

You could have a timing belt that has slipped. This would mean the pistons are hitting the valves. This is not an easy job. You have to drain the coolant, take off the exhaust and intake manifold, take off the head to the cylinders on the engine block. Check for damage to the pistons, replace everything and change the oil.

Why would anyone remove the pos cable while running. thats how battery gets charged. Hard starting while at op temp? timing retarded to far?

run a constant hot (from a fused BATTERY lead) most folks will usually use a 0 or 2 gauge wire for "main" power and ground keep the ground as short as possible (it will hit much harder) and a normal I think 16 or 18 gauge for the "trigger" wire from the head (radio) hope this helps :)

so not a new kid on the block.  I but it on digital tech all is normal check timing it was dead on   I have retarded it 2(dig) still there new plugs no help. I got back to CA were the fuel is better and am running 101 octain fuel a bit better but still there. I am thinking I have carbin biuld up on my pistons and heads.  What Do you THINK.  Has any one other than me had this happen to thenmy 12 used to ping all the time in the summer. tried retarding the timing but it got weaker, and retarding the static timing actually can compound your issue since you are actually removing fuel as well. I went nuts trying to track it down but eventually worked its way out as i tuned my mods. I would try running a few tank fulls of Chevron Techron through it along with top quality, high octane gas from a station thats busy. even better if its a multi-pump type rather than single for all octane types. only time i experience ping now is if i'm sitting in traffic for a ridiculous amount of time and i get on it coming off a light. i just get some air on the motor before romping on it again in that situation. never even think about it these days. try the Techron and see if that helps clean things up.,,,
