I have the same problem. The red light flashes 6 times and according to the trouble shoot sheet--it is power overload. Is the same as a power surge.

Steps to solve: contacted Sony and when they found my unit was only 1 year and 8 months old. they stopped communicating. I bought a new bulb. but that is not the problem.

I think Sony has a quality problem

The problem is the thermal fuse. You need to have service bulletin to fix. I have seen other people have the same issue and it was fixed by getting the SB at agoraquest. It's a step by step guide on replacing the thermal fuse. The member that has the service bulletins is Jehill. He has helped several people with this issue

It takes about 2 hours but saves over $400 in service repair bills.

Here are some of the people that were helped by this

J/K :-p ......worked like a charm :-) Took me about 2 hours and almost half of that was to go and get a 20" #2 philips screwdriver. A 12" would have worked, but they did not have it. Other than than that, no problems. I paid $220 for the TV, $28 for (2) Thermal Fuses, and $11 for a screwdriver. Now I have a decent 2nd TV :-) Not as good as my KD-34XBR960, but not much is :

I just got done replacing the thermal fuse as per your SB and all is well again! I, and most importantly the wife, just want to take the time to thank you so much for your help. With your instructions and this site, we have just saved ourselves alot of $$ not just for this time but also if it were to happen again in the future. I am truley grateful for finding this site and just want to say you are THE MAN!!!

I am Kentuck, I had the same problem and through this site I ddecided to order the thermal fuse and replace it my self. They cost a bout $6.00 each, So I ordered 3 which with shipping and tax came to about $30 bucks.
I tried to buy a schematic from Sony, but they would not sell me one---Believe me this is and my last Sony product that I will buy.

Found the information I needed that the thermal fuse is located on the frame under the bulb. You must take the fan out to get to the fuse.
The next problem is the recognition of the fuse. There is a metal canster type and a small thermal head (1/16 X 1/4 X 1/4 inch and I am gusessing now. ) Follow this wire to the connector and disconnect and replace. I taped my thermal head down because it had no holder. It works fine, because it measures the temperature of the lamp. Gets too hot it blows.

My fix was $30 vers $500 Sony wanted. No more Sony

We had the same thing happen, it was the thermal fuse and cost us 400 to replace now it has been 6 mos. later and having the same problem. The part is only 22.00 but I am not sure I can replace it myself without messing up something else.

Yes thermal fuse is probably the problem about ($11-15).But the problem with that is that some repair shop just replace then .Without cleaning the fans in unit .The thermal fuse can easily blow again causing the same issue. The fans get crusted with dust and do not venting out the heat from lamp properly causing overheat then leading to melted cabinet part or thermal fuse issues...

I had the same problem, with the light blinking 6 times...it was the thermo fuse...the tech replaced it and I think it was around $200 for the part and repair together...That was about 6 months ago and I havn't had the problem again. I also have the KDFE55a20

If your set is going to cost you $495.00 to fix it then you might as well buy a new tv which will be cheaper.from my experience that tv will only cost about between $75.00 to $200.00 to fix.get an estimate from another tech have them take a look at it.before they repair.and let me tell you that it is not the whole power board needs to be replaced just the regulator and some other components.good luck.
