I just got a Dell Studio XPS with Vista 64 - and it will not recognize my Rebel XT - I did not see it as a file system (like used to work on XP).

I have no fix except complain to Canon.

Take a look at Picasa, from Google. Also take a look at Irfanview. I haven't used Irfanview in over a year (since I moved from a PC to a Mac - it's the one piece of software I really miss on my Mac), but before I moved to the Mac it was my primary photo organizer and viewer. It's a very impressive program for free software from an individual programmer (Irfan).

Lost solution disk and directional manual disk need downloads

You don't need any special software to use your camera.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picsaa.

Not a good idea to post your phone # and e-address on this or any other site.

This question arrived on FixYa.

Problem is the camera firmware isn't compatible with the software possible needs a Canon free update or purchase a card reader and download your pictures stepping around the camera.

The computer will look at this card reader with the memory card installed as an external hard drive or memory device.

Download you pictures and then do a safely eject or eject before removing the memory card, once back in the camera remember to format the memory card this give the camera a nice clean surface to work with again.

Need installation software to download Canon Digital Rebel XT/EOS to my computer so I can download pictures. I have misplaced the disk which came with the camera. Is it possible to download that software...

You can download Canon software from

Canon Rebel XS says it's busy

I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Rebel XS.

Installation of this Canon EOS Rebel XS firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:
  1. Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
  2. The message, "Err 99 Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to<OFF> and <ON> again or re-install the battery", appears on the camera's LCD monitor, and after the above operation is carried out,the LCD monitor displays in a language that is different from the actual language setting.
See the firmware instructions and download the firmware upgrade by following these Fixya Tips :

  1. Follow this link to download a pdf version of the firmware installation instruction guide.
  2. Follow this link to download the Windows Version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.
  3. Follow this link to download the MAC version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.
  4. Follow this link to download the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D Instruction Manual.

I hope that helps.

New computer. No Canon sofware. Canon Rebel EOS purchased second hand. Where can I get the software to download the pictures?

Hopefully you have the EOS Digital Rebel. (The EOS Rebel was a film camera.) Without the software that came with the camera (ZoomBrowser EX for Windows or ImageBrowser for Mac), you can only download JPG images using the PTP communication mode. The communication mode is set up in the Menu system on the camera, and is either "Normal" or "PTP". If you want to download RAW files, you will need to use a software application that has a converter for Canon RAW files (Photoshop, etc.). If you didn't get a User's Manual, you can get one here.
