You probably shouldn't be using a zig zag for that application. But the multi-stitch zig zag.

Please look at page 40 of your manual for information.

As for needle breaking check to make sure your need is the correct one for the thread and fabric. Also make sure your pressure foot is the one recommended for the stitch. Consider this... most thicker fabrics require a longer stitch.

Try pushing the reset button underneath the machine. Mine does that too. I had it repaired a few months ago...apparently it needs a circuit board that is no longer available.

SOURCE: ZIG-ZAG NOT WORKING

Make sure your presser foot is tight down. If the needle is going from side to side, it's doing it's job. If the stitches are coming out straight, the material is probably slipping back and forth to center area. The presser will eliminate this.

SOURCE: I cannot get my sewing machine stitch the

When you select a pattern does the needle move back and forth? do you make sure the stitch width lever is on straight stitch then select your pattern then select the widest stitch width? if when you select a zig zag stitch the needle does not move from side to side then you need to look in the top at the finger that goes round the cam.

Set your machine for a zig-zag (or stretch stitch if you have it) to accommodate the fabric stretch.

Use a good quality thread. Avoid old or bargain bin threads. Cotton thread will break easier than polyester.

You may need to adjust the tension for the fabric.

The needle keeps breaking

Either you have the wrong foot installed or your stitch setting is incorrect. Dial in a narrower setting. You may have a zig-zag setting without the zig-zag foot attachment, or your "width" dial is too wide for the foot's hole. Slowing turn the wheel and watch where the needle penetrates the foot hole. A collision at that point will break your needle every time!

What settings are required to sew jersey. Have the needs but not quite sure of settings

Jersey is a knit so you want to use ball point needles and probably a slight zig-zag stitch or a stretch stitch (if your machine has one), otherwise when the fabric stretches, the threads will break (resulting in a possible embarrassing moment!).

When I sew knits, the stitching is never tight enough. I have a Singer 7258. It is very loose and looks bad. What settings should i use when sewing knits?

here is a link for a free manual for the machine, it should have the information you need in it,, always use a scrap piece of fabric your sewing to adjust the tension, when adjusting the top thread tension do it one number or letter at a time and then sew on the scrap fabric, until you get the desired stitch you want.

Needle types
There are three main types of needles that are used for the majority of sewing, as well as many specialty needles.
Universal needles have a slightly rounded tip, and this general purpose needle should be used on wovens as well as some sturdy knits.
Jersey needles have a medium ballpoint tip designed especially for knit fabrics because it slips between the knit fibers and does not break or damage them while sewing.
Stretch needles, often confused with Jersey needles, are also a medium ballpoint tip, but these have a special eye and scarf that are designed for extremely stretchy fabrics and elastic. Swimwear is an ideal application for this type of needle.

Machine won't zig zag even though the needle goes from side to side the line of stitching is straight.

put in a new needle
rethread the machine top & bobbin--use every thread guide
make sure the zig zag settings are correct
it's also possible that the machine could have a worn or damaged gear or cam--which would have to be checked at a sewing machine shop

My machine is skipping stitches

Lower the pressure on the feed dogs, use a stretch stitch, and longer stitch length. Be sure to use a good quality thread, and maybe go lighter weight thread.

Trouble sewing lycra fabric using a zig zag stitch

You have the machine set for blind hem stitching. Change the stitch selector to stretch stitch, which is a single, in line stitching zig zag stitch.
