Can you plug pick up internet with a different laptop in the same place? If another laptop can plug in with the same ethernet cable and get a signal then you know its "your" laptop and not the cable or the connection, If it is your laptop that is the problem, check to see if your network card is working properly by going into device manager. My guess is you need a new network card.
I can plug in other laptops in to the same place. When I went into device manager my ethernet controller was disabled so I thought I would be OK. After enabling it my computer can now not "identify the network" so I do not have internet access. Do you think I should try and re install the driver? I want to thank you for such a quick response!

Hi,
This method will hard reset the wireless drivers back
to
default settings, but before you perform this remove power from the
modem and router for 2 minutes reconnect power and wait another 2
minutes for them to settle down.
Right click "computer" select "manage"
and then "device manager", a list will populate, then click on the + sign next to "network
adapters" and right click on the wireless adapter and "uninstall" the
device, reboot the PC and wait for windows to detect the wireless
card and install the drivers for it, this will appear in the system
tray (bottom right hand side) when its done try to connect again.
Good luck.

Have you installed the driver for the router that you are using or using the inbuilt windows program to search for your wireless network?
If windows, are you searching all channels or is it set to only find unsecure networks whilst i assume yours is secure?

There are several things you can try. First, I would recommend resetting the router by unplugging the power cord than reconnecting. Many times, that solution works. Next, right click on the network connection icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen (normally it looks like two monitor screens). It should bring up a list of choices one of which is connect to internet. When you click on that, it should show all the wireless networks available in your area. Your wireless network should be listed too, show highlight that by left clicking on it, then, at the bottom of that screen, there should be a button that says "connect". Click on that, and you should be able to connect. When you were connected using an ethernet cable, were there any connectivity problems(e.g. losing your internet connection)? If so, you may have to upgrade the firmware to your wireless router. For that you would have to contact the manufacturer's technical support people and they can assist you with downloading the file. Good luck!
