How can I incorporate the use of a foam roller in my Yoga workout?

Yoga and foam rollers have been combined due to the similarities in positions. Using a foam roller in your Yoga exercises can help enhance your workout routine. Here are a few ways to incorporate foam rollers into your Yoga routine:

  • • The plank position - rest your forearms on the foam roller rather than the mat; this adds a level of balance
  • • Downward facing dog - from the downward dog position move into the upward facing dog with your thighs on the foam roller. Then move into a low plank moving the front of your thighs back and forth over the foam roller
  • • Bridge position - once body is in the bridge position, slowly come down and situate your lower spine on the foam roller; then pull your knees towards your chest and massage your lower spine by moving your knees and legs in a circular motion.

Where can I buy a half round foam roller online to use while I am doing Yoga?

There are a few places to purchase foam rollers online - you could also go to a local sports store near you. The first link is the brand that I bought, and I found it here for even less than I paid.

Why is it so painful to use my foam roller? Am I doing it wrong?

When using a foam roller you are giving yourself a deep-tissue massage - this is expected to be slightly uncomfortable. After using the foam roller you should feel better, not worse. If you are in pain you should consult a physical therapist perhaps. If your body is sore only while using the foam roller than I would not worry too much; however is you are concerned, consider talking to a personal trainer about tips on using your foam roller.
