I have a Maytag Atlantis MAV8551, and when I turn it on all I hear is a humming comming from it and no water (hot or cold). I have done basics such as checking the water lines etc.. I was wondering what it could be? (water inlet valve?)

Re: Washing machine wont fill
The humming noise is usually the inlet valve energised but no water there to come in. i appreciate you have checked.
the other possibility is that the appliance has not pumped out completely and the noise you hear is the drain pump energised but stuck due to perhaps a foreign object in it. fault is unlikely to be inlet valve

The inlet valve on the cold water inlet is clogged, dirty or jammed. You need to remove the inlet valve and clean the valve and filter. use back flushing with brushing to clean the filter.
the hum you hear is of the coil working but is not opening to allow water into the system.
Also you can switch the inlet valve from the hot line if needed .
check this link for removing the inlet valve:
check to see if you have power to the fill valve when the cold water should be going in;(reverse the connectors on the fill valve) i.e. hot now will not go in... replace the fill valve: (buy it at an appliance parts store) (inexpensive) it's an easy replacement job
ok just a touch of help for ,,onthejob...i need you to start at a cycle and put unit on cold cold,,ok...now i want you to put your hand on back of unit where the inlet vavle and the hose meet at unit...do you feel a vibebration,,or here it humming,,now if hot water comes though,,all you have to do is reverse the hoses there on wrong,,im here onthejob
It sounds like your cold water celenoid is going out. You have to replace the whole water valve. it should be around 30 bucks. your local parts store should have it in stock, Just take your model # with you.
One of your water solenoid valves are either going bad or stuck open with a little sediment. Find out which is leaking by turning off one of the water lines to the washer. If after it is turned off it still leaks try turning the first water valve back on the turn the other water valve off. This will help you determine which solenoid valve is having the problem. Once identified it is easily replaced.
Make sure your hot water supply valve is on first. If so then try reversing the hot and cold water feed lines and see if you get hot water when asking for cold. The water valve for the hot water side could be bad. Are you familiar with a voltage meter or know someone that can see if you valve coil is getting 120V when the machine is trying to fill with hot water. If not the control unit is faulty. If you do have the 120Vac on the solinoid coil and no water the either the coil is open circuit(bad) or the inlet is plugged. Most generally the problem is in the control knob unit.
